Surgeons Who Play Video Games Err Less

quote:
All those years on the couch playing Nintendo and PlayStation appear to be paying off for surgeons. Researchers found that doctors who spent at least three hours a week playing video games made about 37 percent fewer mistakes in laparoscopic surgery and performed the task 27 percent faster than their counterparts who did not play video games.

Now that's just fascinating.

Ah, but is it a cause, or merely a symptom? Do surgeons who play games improve their manual dexterity, or do the surgeons with better manual dexterity tend to get more out of games?

There's no mention of the fact that many games are just button-mashing - I wonder if it were particular genres that were being played. Controllers are incredibly inaccurate anyway - you can't control anything on a computer/console to the level of accuracy those guys surely have to deal with?

It'd be a bit odd though, wouldn't it? After a horrific accident the patient is wheeled into theatre for emergency surgery. The duty surgeon appears, pizza slice in one hand, wiping the other on his "Sonic the Hedgehog" t-shirt. "Thank God!" the patient mutters. "He's a gamer!"

That's great. I hope Monkey Surgeon makes it into the next game.

Please forward a copy of this article to my parents, care of 20 years ago. My childhood would be much improved.

To quote my little sister (she's a surgical tech and works in surgery all day), "You'd be surprised."
