Off Track (aka What makes an RPG an RPG) |
|
Ok so I was so obsessed with making the 'perfect team' and restarting until I did, that the first game that ever made it past 4hrs of gameplay is now totally twisted lol
My guys are about level 17-18, and only because I've been browsing this site for the past 2-3 days I realized how totally off track I am, I went from Martens quest, to the Umpani/T'rang quests, to the Rapax initiate quest...I guess what I'm trying to say is that there is a feeling that most RPGs are pretty linear in the way the quests are solved and the way the quests are delivered, this game is definitely not that way, very suprising in a good way. I just figured I was gonna fight everything until nothing else was left to kill and whatever areas still had monsters must be the way the game continues...in W8 it looks like I keep walking down long 'quest' roads, waiting for the end of one to lead to another when instead they all kept branching more and more...sweet (good for replayability)
Also, why do many people not consider Gothic an RPG? Or at least a true RPG?
Are there not Stats that you develop to steer your character where you want him to go (Character development)
Is there not a deep and branching plot and characters that you role play with to get the story to unfold? (Plot)
Is there not tons of weapons, quests, armors and items for your character to seek out?
Seems like most people seem to relate RPGs with first person or 3/4 top-down perspectives...to me it seems Gothic is an RPG just done even better, because with the behind the back view, it really looks like your immersed in your world, with peripheral vision and a good visual 'guage' around you |

You're doing just fine. Wiz8 gives you a great deal of freedom without leaving you aimless (like Morrowind).
I've never heard anyone say Gothic isn't an RPG. If someone did, I'd say they need to revisit their definitions. Gothic has some differences from "old-school" RPGs like Wiz8 and the M&M series, but that doesn't mean it isn't an RPG. _________________ =Proud Member of the Non-Flamers Guild=

Sorry. No pearls of wisdom in this oyster.
