Hey,

I know people have posted about this before but no one seems to know exactly what is required to get the water effects. I know GeForce 3 and 4 support it but does anyone know exactly what process is used? e.g. Pixel Shader?

The reason I ask is I am going to be running the game on my laptop and I want to upgrade to a card that will support the nice water effects, at the moment I have a GeForce2Go and I was thinking of getting a Radeon Mobility 7800 if it supports it.

Thanks

To be able to see that cool water effect you'll need the DirectX 8 capable pixel and vertex shaders.

Cards that have that are:
all of the Geforce 3's and the REAL Geforce 4 series.
The Geforce 4 MX series DO NOT have that capability! Don't be fooled by the name.
Look for names like Geforce 4 Ti 4200, 4400 or 4600 to be sure you'll get a GENUINE Geforce 4 instead of the misleading Geforce 4 MX.

Personaly I'm looking at the Geforce 3 Ti 200, since that's the cheapest card at the moment who will give me that pixel and vertex shader I want
But there is still time untill Morrowind comes out. Who knows what new cards we'll see in the mean time?

EDIT: I don't know if that particular Radeon will support it. I do know that some Radeon card do.
Just go Geforce man, it's better (i'm kidding, just take the card you like best ofcourse)

I would love to go GeForce but since I use a laptop I am real limited in my choice. The only other GeForce I can get is a GeForce4MX 440 and as you rightly point out it doesnt have what it takes!

I'm pretty sure the Radeon 8500 it the only ATI card that will support the pretty water effects like the GF3's and 4's. Currently I dont think there is a laptop vid card on the market that has the DirectX 8 capable pixel and vertex shaders.

The only ati card that supports the water effects is radeon 8500, and don’t get a GeForce4mx it’s like a GeForce2 but faster.

If your videocard does not support the water effects, you can always take some LSD and you'll see nice effects as well.

I want to see water effects.... All I have is a ATI Rage Pro 128, its a decent card but i wont get water effects.......I need a Geforce....im thinkin a GeForce 3 Ti 500 for Morrowind and also for Everquest, but what i want to know is will a Ti 200 work as well? Cause that would save me some cash seein as how the last Ti 500 i saw was $349.00

They have a GeForce3 Ti 500 at this site for $232.78:

As far as I know as long as its a GeForce3 Ti or higher then it will work. Dont buy any MX (Even the GeForce4) cuz that wont support it.

The following link takes you to the official forum where you will see two screens.
One with the nice water effect and one without.

The Radeon 8500 can do the pretty water and can be had for as cheap as $135 (OEM) and maybe even cheaper if you can snatch a refurb on newegg.com. I got mine refurbished from them and it came with everything, worked fine and was in near mint condition.

ARG!! Does anyone here actually understand what a laptop is?

Thanks for the screenshot links snoekie, that helps a lot. There is quite a big difference but if I cant get the nice water I think I can live with it. I bet the game is still gonna be amazing without that anyway.
