skill point question

In general, is there much reason to boost a skill above 20 or so? Seems like 20+d20 should give you a pretty darn good result on most skills.

For example, my HotU monk has a 20 in discipline now, but I'm thinking that might be enough. I've started putting my meager 5 points per level into some non-melee skills now, and I'm wondering if that's wise.

While we're at it, would any of our resident gurus (*cough* Xen *cough*) care to define a "recommended skill point allocation" for the base (non-prestige)classes? I know that there will some variation depending on how the character will be played, but I'd think there will be some common ground for most of the classes. For example, a wizzy or sorc will always want to put a point into spellcraft each level. Thoughts?

For a Wiz, there's no problem since they have high Int and tons of SP's. For a Sorc it's very different. As the controlling stat there is CHAR you don't need a high INT so set at 10, you only get 2 SP's Concentration and Spellcraft are vital, so that's all you get. Now, some of the Epic feats require a base skill level that is very high. For example, Epic spells need a spellcraft rank ranging from 15-34. That means, I have to plow all my SP's into Spellcraft to boost them up as I had been keeping them balanced. Xen will be able to tell you more, but that's what I've discovered so far.

Very few skills demand a skill check in excess of +30 to achieve the best possible result so a +20 is typically. There are exceptions, of course... Knowledge: Arcana (called Lore in NWN), Spellcraft, and Concentration all DEMAND maximum rank. Well, lore not so much (though there are a few puzzles that lore helps with). In pen and paper your Knowledge: Arcana ranks determine how many epic spells you can cast a day.

The exception is rogue. Lockpicking can get ridiculous in DCs, but disable trap caps out at 34. Pickpocket only needs a 20 or so to steal something but the higher you have it the less chance they'll spot you. Hide and move silent checks always benefit from being higher, as do spot, search, and listen.

Hmm. Ok, looking at that list in context of NWN... Yes, there's a benefit to putting skills higher than 20.

Basics skill points? Ok. In NWN...

Fighter/Ranger/Paladin/Barbarian/Monk: Umm... Lore. That is all. Everything else discretionary. And lore only if you're like me and can't wait to ID whatever goody you just found. Monks get a nice selection of skills and can usually get away with maxing persuasion and tumble.

Cleric/Druid: Persuasion if you like... enough heal to always get a 15+ (not hard with your large wisdom bonus) so you can cure poison and disease with the healing kits. Spellcraft and concentration are a plus (spellcraft for the epic reasons mostly. concentration because clerics usually cast under heavy attack.). Druids should add animal empathy just because they can.

Rogue/Bard: All of them. You will have to make sacrifices based on what type of rogue you want to play. Appraise, Spot, Listen, Search, Move Silent, Hide, Disable Device (a must), Pick Lock, Pick Pocket, Persuasion, Bluff, Intimidate, and Tumble are all critical. That's 13 skills with 8 skill points a level... a human rogue with an 18 int can meet my dream list.

The only true "Must have" on the rogue list, however, is disable device. They're the only ones who can disarm magical traps above DC 25. Everything else is player discretion.

Wizard/Sorcerer: Spellcraft, Lore, Concentration. The Trinity of Arcane Dominance: Cast, learn or recognize bigger spells, identify magical problems, and cast under pressure.

Eh? No! What about discipline? A warrior without discipline in NWN will not be able to fight two rounds without losing his weapon or being knocked down when fighting against a cunning opponent! Those classes should get discipline every level, in my opinion.

I've never taken discipline with my fighters. If I was fighting vs other players then ... certainly, yes, absolutely max discipline... but in all of NWN only Dragons and the Bebilith Knockdown (and their bonus means they will do so no matter what you do) and I've only seen two people Disarm.

It's like concentration for fighter... great for beating taunt but taunt is never used by the computer.

My level 24 blackguard has perhaps 5 or 10 ranks in discipline (tops) and does just fine.
