How many gates to Oblivion?
   

I was just curious to know how many gates are there in total?

I have read somewhere that it's one gate for each city plus several other "random" ones.
It seems like you have to only close the city gates for the main plot so it should be eight or nine gates that you have to close in total (I'm not sure if Imp City has its own gate so 8 or 9) to be able to finish the story.
I don't know how many other gates there are and whether they are truly random or whether they pop up in fixed positions.
Someone said that the longer you wait with the main plot, the more "random" gates start popping up all over the world but I'm not sure if that has been confirmed.

I've closed 10 gates already and there are plenty more waiting to be closed.There are 4 gates in the Kvatch area, 2 south east of chydenhyal(sp) right on the eastern edge of the map, 1 around Bravil, and another 2 right near to the daedric shrine due west of the imperial city(one to the east and one to the west).

I am making a guess when I say there could be 16 gates (1 for each daedra) but I guess there could be more. I don't think they are random either because so far I think each one has been slightly unique in how you reach the sigil stone.

I read on the official forums that there can be up to 40 gates that spawn over the course of time.

I've closed 8 of em so far and I havn't even gone to the Mythic Dawn hide out to get the Dragon Amulet yet.

I also read that once you finish the main quest all of the gates close whether you shut em down or not.

Personally I like shutting the gates...the Sigil Stones are nice for customizing gear with enchantments and the random rare magic items can be nice too.

Also adds an extra type of adventuring to choose from so if I don't feel like crawling through abandoned bases, Ayleid ruins, caves, or mines and don't feel like doing quests I can go prowl through a portion of Oblivion.

Is there any differance between the 'main' gates and the random gates that spawn. Cos I have closed the gate at Kvatch and then closed another on my way to Chendiyl which seemed really small in comparison to Kvatch... How can you tell which are the main gates?

On a seperate note the cool magic items you find inside the gates are just awesome!!!

I think they spawn semi randomly. i closed one gate, then had to load a much earlier saved game, and when I went back to re-close it, it hadn't appeared.

Infinite. Really.

There is one major gate for each city (don't think there's one for Imp City). You need to close the major gate for each city to get that city to help you in the Allies for Bruma quest. Once closed those major gates do not re-appear. But there is an unlimited number of minor gates that appear around the countryside. They *will* continue to reappear endlessly until you finish the main quest line. So, closing any of them other than the major ones associated with each city is pointless (unless you just like doing it).

Sometimes it's really annoying that there are minor (irrelevant) gates near a city as well as the Major gate you need to close...so it's not obvious which is the exact one you *need* to close. Usually in that case it's the gate that has appeared on/in a small ruin of some sort nearest the city in question.

They are not infinite I am sure. I can pretty much confirm the map that shows roughly 50ish gates is correct as I have closed 23 and every single one appeared in the same place as on that map and none have re-opened as far as I am aware.

Personally I found closing the Oblivion gates to be the most boring, tedious part of the game.

After closing 4 on my own after doing Kvatch, I decided to only do the ones necessary for the plot afterwards so I could get them over with ASAP.

At some point I just started running through all the gates as fast as I could just to get the sigil stone and end the madness.

Maybe if they had added some variety to the landscape and enemies of each gate it would have been more interested. I know the layouts of each area are not exactly the same ... but the variation isn't enough to make it interesting.

EDIT: If you really want to know how many you absolutely have to do, the answer is: 2!!! That's right 2!!!!

If you want to know the details, read the spoilers:

Spoiler:


1. You must close the Kvatch gate, as this furthers the main plot.
2. You must close the "Great Sigil Stone Gate" as part of the Battle of Bruma

..and that's it! Now, before the Bruma battle you are asked to visit each city and ask if they can send troops to help Bruma. Now, if you want these extra troops, then you will have to close the Oblivion gates outside each major city (except for the Imperial city). This is where people are getting the "9 required gates" figure from.

But the turth is, getting help from the other cities is opitional. You can choose to do the Bruma battle with just yourself, the Bruma troops, and the blades. And if you go this route, then indeed you will only have to close 2 gates for the whole game.




That being said, I still closed each gate that was outside a major city because the Sigil stones are very valuable for enchanting and you get some good loot. However, I had no desire to go around doing all those random gates that opened. It just wasn't fun enough to go through all that.

I've discovered at least 70 in my travels, getting tired of slaughtering Daedra but don't want to end main quest until I know I've got 'em all.

Some gates have two entrances, if you enter in colovian highlands and skirt around the Sigil Tower instead of assaulting it straight away, good acrobatics helps, you may find another gate and exit near SKingrad. If you re-enter through the second gate you just passed back into Cyrodiil through and reach the same plane of Oblivion, the Skingrad gate will close when you take the Sigil Stone. The Colovian Highlands gate should still be open.

Actually, the two most interesting gates are the final Great Gate, mainly due to the 'time' element and the one where you are trying to save a Count's son!! Keeping that suicidal maniac alive was the toughest quest in the whole main campaign!! I killed him more often than the Daedra when he insisted in dashing in front of my spell!! I was exhausted by the end!!

Hehe, couldn't you tell that guy to just 'stay here'? That's what I usually did with all NPCs that you had to protect, i.e. I "parked" them somewhere safe until the road was clear or in case of that Oblivion gate, I believe you could just leave the guy back at the entrance and then play through the gate solo as if he wasn't there from start to finish.

Protecting NPCs is definitely very tedious and nerve-wrecking in this game due to the level scaling. It seems like the level of the NPC(s) that you need to protect always remains fixed (like in the Battle of Kvatch) while you and the monsters can/will be any -mostly higher- level. That's why I stopped caring about non-quest/story-critical NPCs fairly soon. Just let them die. So what? .

[OT]Yes, the count's son was a professional lava-dipper, but he survived. It was really hard for me to keep him and his friend alive, though.
But the battle which really made me want to cry was the final one. I mean, I was thankful for

Ocato's immortality, and he made a fine job of defending our rear and thus keeping at least Martin's butt safe, but oh the waste... so many dead legionnaires and palace guards
. It was a shame. I would have loved to save the Legion messenger's life (at least that one), and perhaps Captain Steffan of the Blades, but no matter what I did, this rabid messenger kid always overtook me and threw himself against

three Dremora Valkynaz (two fighters, one mage) and two Xivilai. He usually died before he reached the bottom of the stairs, and I always lost track of Steffan only to discover his dead body later on (did you know he was balding? No, really...)

The only time the aggro Legion messenger wasn't killed by the enemy, he actually jumped the foe I had been fighting while I was just pressing a force attack. Needless to say I nailed him to the
