GameSpot's "Best and Worst of 2004" - Best RPG of

The staff of GameSpot's "<a href="http://" target="_blank">Best & Worst</a>" of 2004 have announced their Genre Awards today - with some very strange nominations for the "Best RPG" for 2004 - i.e. nominated in the best RPG category were:
<br>
<br>(1) Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings & The Lost Ocean (GameCube)
<br>
<br>(2) Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (GameCube)
<br>
<br>(3) Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne (PS2)
<br>
<br>(4) Star Wars KotOR II: The Sith Lords (Xbox)
<br>
<br>(5) Tales of Symphonia (GameCube)
<br>
<br>I noticed there were no PC RPG's that made the nomination as a finalist. Even stranger was the announced "Winner" - Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.

Gamespot's reviews, nominations and rewards are based on the amount of money the developers wish to spend on it. I cant believe you guys still take this site serious although rpgdot.com is getting more and more cluttered with horrible advertisements as well, my worst nightmare is this wonderfull site being taken over by Jolt and pronouncing Fable as the best rpg of 2004 *shivers*

Jolt was no editorial input. None. Zip.

He can say what he likes about GameSpot - I just wanted to point out that the stupid Fable ad has zero bearing on what the content staff do.

I know Dhruin thats why i said this is a wonderfull site and it is my worst nightmare, as in hoping it will never happen. Cant blame a poor reader who's been reading rpgdot.com for years noticing the impact that the move to Jolt had sofar, like indeed anyoing ads on the site, getting a little nervous now dont you?

I remember gamespot being a good site also before money happened.

RPGDot only has awards for the Game of the Year based on the input from our visitors. The editors do make a choice as well, but it is not presented as an award.
The ad is annoying to everybody, including the RPGDot team and Jolt. However, due to several reasons we will have to live with it for now until it is finished.
Jolt has purchased the domain of RPGDot. The editorial rights are in the hands of the RPGDot team, which is not being paid by Jolt.... actually, they are not being paid at all

But then again, your IP address tells me you already knew this.

*chuckles* I probably shouldn't even make a reply - let's face it - while I consider myself to be a fairly competent Editor/Reporter, my "Forum Personna" leaves much to be desired:-)

With that disclaimer - let me just re-iterate that our goal here at RPGDot is to bring the readers as much of the pertinent gaming news from around the world/web as we possibly can.

Insofar as a personal bias - I frankly have none either for, nor against, such websites as GameSpot, GameSpy, Jolt, IGN, FilePlanet, etc...where I may have a particular fondness, I try to keep hidden for reporting purposes (albeit I guess I am known for my support of Modsites and Indie Developers).

Whether or not I personally agree with the opinions in this thread is - quite frankly - a moot point. We have the forums set up so that you, the reader, can provide us with precisely the kind of feedback you want to express - and I've worn the uniform and spent a very large part of my life (and blood) defending the right of freedom to even suggest that anyone's opinion - no matter how "personally" disagreeable, is still valid.

That being said - I thank everyone for their input, and wish all the very best of the Christmas season.

Errm kinda lost me there, what do you mean? that the guest is me(Deg) also? I figured that became obvious by reading my 2nd reply. It is something that happens with the forums, maybee a bug or so but i couldnt stay logged on switching from the main site to the forum whatever i tried and since my name doesnt mean anything here anyway looking at my enormous postcount i figured it wasnt a big deal. It works fine again since yesterday though.

There has always been a tremendous difference between rpgdot.com and the 'in for the money' bunch you name there. I can think of plenty ways to manipulate the news here to favor certain developers who hand out the largest 'donation' yet this never happened here sofar as i figure it happens all the time on the others you name. Slowly all the good sites with independent reporting and news disapeared or have been swallowed by the commercial operating sites. Now im sure they have kids to feed as well so i dont have anything against them, i just dont believe a word they write

Anyway i hope this clears my remarks up a bit that were, although true to my feelings, with a bit to sharp a tongue perhaps.

I wish you all a wonderfull christmas time!
