Spiderweb: View from the Bottom #3 @ RPG Vault

Jeff Vogel from Spiderweb writes his third View from the Bottom diary for RPG Vault. It's a fascinating read if you are at all interested in indie development with Jeff's usual touch of humour:
Like all (or many, or some, or none at all) other game developers, I spend a lot of time staring into the void of my own uselessness. So, to try to give my life a sense of meaning and accomplishment, I occasionally try to innovate.

I really hate trying to do something new. Sure, it gives personal satisfaction. But you know what else is fulfilling? Staying in business. Not losing your house. And you can't pay for food with Creativity checks.

But, every five years or so, I try to do something that isn't the standard material. For example, once, I wrote Nethergate.

Ahhh. It's been a while since I've had my 'Jeff Vogal Sarcasm' fix. This was quite refreshing. Thanks Jeff! And I'm right there with you, I like to eat and NOT lose my house too.

I've always loved Spiderweb, but I disagree with some of the things he says there. First off Nethergate was an extremely flawed game. The flavor and backstory and ancient roman thing were great.....there was no question about that. But the actual game mechanics and game balance were horrible, and combat began to be mind numbingly dull about halfway through. Nethergate used a different combat engine from the games Jeff had used before, and while this system would eventually become a big improvement over his past exile games, it was very poorly balanced in Nethergate. Overall this game would have failed even more horribly if it had been your standard fantasy tolkien stuff.

I also think Spiderweb is taking the lack of innovation thing to the extreme these days. All of their games just seem a little too similar to each other. It's enough to make even a die hard fan like me think twice about getting the next one (although I probably still will).
