Damnit..a real strange this is happening here
i downloaded the Gothic demo last monday... it worked perfectly without any error...today i formatted my PC because of many reasons..now when i press setup in the Gothic Directory and i press ok i get this error and it won't stop...

An Error Occured while launching the setup,
no reason given...

please help, cause i was totally crazy about the fantastic demo and i never finished it at all...i can't even install it now...

did you install the latest drivers and/or dx8? did you turn on (or off) dma for the cdrom (try both settings), if the demo is on cdrom now? maybe it cannot be installed from cdrom because of the write protection?
make sure, everything is exactly the same way when it was running...
ahhh, one more thing: did you change the hard disk partitions? maybe the size is too small or too large now...
really no other idea right now...please keep me updated - good luck!

Yes i have directx 8, and not yet the latest
nvidia detonators..but i didnt have those detonators neither before the format.

i have downloaded the demo from a belgian game site called Spelletjesgarnaal

In configuration screen/System i have Dma
turned on for my cdrom...i havent changed that too..so i could try that.

where can i see if my HD partitions are changed?

did u make a clean install or only a setup over the last windows?
If u did an overinstall u can search with regedit if u find some old Gothic keys and del them.

But i m not sure if that can help only something to do ;(

And the reason why i formatted my pc was because i find the performance of my amd 1ghz
very bad..i don't know what it can be..but still now..the demo of Gothic stutters all the time..it just doesnt work smooth.. though
i have the via drivers, Nvidia detonaters
everything..but it keeps having slowdown..i really don't know how it can be with a system like this.

The Gothic World is so big that u have to load from your HD while playing. So the key points in optimize your system for Gothic is: Lots of RAM, 196 is ok 256 ist better and more is even better
A fast HD, best is DMA33 66 or 100
A stastic win memory best one a second HD and
A defracmented HD.

i watsched a log of my CPU after playing and i saw that my 1.4 AMD was most only running 50%. This was with all settings maxed out.
So 1GHz is realy not to low it worked for me with 700MHz good too.

Zonk´s observations and suggestions are absolutely correct.
Additionally I recommend you download and install Cacheman 5 from
http://www.outertech.com/

Use it to optimize your caches. You need as much _free_ RAM as possible. More free RAM means faster load and save.
The most important feature is "Conservative swapfile usage", which seriously decreases swapping.

Other things you might want to have a look at are DXDiag and 3DMark2001.
