I found this herring (sp?) in a cave after killing some loafers or some such bums. Is this the one with that special paper or whatever that you need to find in order to join the thieves guild? If so, I need to find out what to do after that.

That is the wrong Herring. That is the one in the cave of thieves just outside of the front gate around the mountain of the city.
The actual fish will (can not remember) not even be called a herring, but an 'Ugly Fish' with a strange look to it, since it contains a note stitched inside it. You will find it closer to the backside of the city toward the rest of the country in a cave with some bad guys.
I guess it is a play on the phrase 'Red Herring' a way of raising on an issue that is for deception away from the truth. I thought that fish was in Gothic 2?
If it is in Gothic 1, then sorry - I really do not remember ther being one in it.

My bad!  Thanks for the help though. The only other place I can think of there being a cave is near Akil's farm. But there's about 6 Wargs preventing me from getting to it and my guy isn't nealy strong enough to take them all on.

to go to the thieves-guild-related cave go to akil then at the sign go left in the wood go on and after a hill on the left you'll find the cave,
The herring is useless, but if you eat it you'll heal 20 hp. |

where you find herring there is orc axe and you're in the cave under lighthouse ... near akils farm there is some loafers but that fish is "light fish" or something like that ..there is message hidden.. to get to the thieves guild is many ways ..there is three guys ...some of them you have to put to jail ..then thieves guild send a guy to kill you who has a key to thieves guild ....but finding that paper is one way to get that..

I keep going the way with the most monsters in order to gain more experience to become good enough to take on the monsters I keep running into, Obviously I'm still used to Morrowind. Thanks for the tips.

But there definitely is a herring that's just called "Herring", which heals you 20 hp. Nothing inside it. |
