picking up

I just got "Gothic" 1. I can't make Avatar pick up anything (swords, berries, nothing). The action command does nothing.
Oh,yeah, and I can't talk to any NPC either. Any help is appreciated

Welcome to the forum!

The concept behind the controls is simple:
You press the 'action key' (Ctrl or the LMB) to indicate that you want to manipulate the item or NPC you´re looking at. Then 'forward' is always the most obvious choice (pick up, talk, use, attack, etc.).
You have more choices on the other cursor keys during combat. All this is explained in JemyM´s FAQ. You´ll get used to it in a short time.

(Ctrl or LMB) + forward does 90% of all things.
