Nothing. Itīs just the closest thing to the Gothics. Obviously PB played Ultima:Ascension during Gothicīs development.

Some people here, including me, like it as a linear RPG with a good atmosphere (at least with the unofficial patches). U:A is generally considered as a weak 'Ultima' because itīs completely inconsistent with the rest of the series. Reviews rated it badly, probably because the reviewers expected another Ultima 7. (The two U7s are aguably the best CRPGs ever.)

It can probably be found for a few bucks on ebay.

btw., you could have used the search function instead of opening another thread on this old topic. Everything has been said before, at least 10 times.

The topic was originally about someone suggesting a game to me, with me criteria.

I know this is a bit off topic (in this thread) but I just have to brag about what I managed to find in the bargain bin here in Sweden. (Bought this for less than 10 dollars)

You should play Gothic 1. Nothing else is similar, really.

I totally agree with Gorath: Both Ultima 7s arguably are best CRPGs.
U9 was too buggy ( impossibly ) to play without the latest patch.
Plus it didn't follow original storyline blah... blah...
Btw I also bought the original as soon as it came out for a whooping $39.99, but couldn't beat it thanks to a bug and got bored of it...
But it is still the closest looking kind of game that is like the Gothic series.
But I don't recommend it, buy Ultima Collection CD from ebay and play both Ultima 7s instead...
But you may not like it because of its old fashion graphics, or you may have trouble running the game...
Or try out Final Fantasy series if you haven't, although they aren't similar to Gothic series.
Btw U7s rule...

There is nothing great about Ultima Crapcension, trust me.

he is blowing smoke out of his ass and probably is one of the 10 people in the world that actually likes Pools Of Radiance.

Take his advice with a grain of salt

Morrowind is THE way to go, especially with the excellent BLoodmoon expansion

Anyone ever heard of Fable

That game lets you do quite a bit. Sadly its only for the X-box.

Curse you Peter Molyneux curse you!

I'll give another vote for Morrowind; truly epic in scope. Also, if you like FPS games with RPG elements, System Shock (1&2) and Deus Ex are great.

Along with SS2 and Deus Ex 1 and 2; try the series THIEF 1, 2 and 3 released just now. You are a a master thief named Garrett and is definitely has that old gothic other-world first person feel.

Newest one is out on 11-4-2003 and is kicking immersion and graphics; stealth type game and combat. Really cool. You can get the Thief 1 and 2 as a polished released version gold pack at many retailers on sale for less than 15$ dollars gold and platinum editions (enhanced graphics, patched, and extra content). Darn good buy and a great series.

I hope for a Arx 2 with more gameplay and polish. It is a decent game, but short and needed some polish would have really made it shine.

Well, my votes goes to Morrowind, Arx Fatalis and Ultima IX, for closest games, and i don't see anything wrong about Ultima IX, after patching it.
No doubt that Gothic 2 addon would be the best of all

When Did I claim I like Pool of Radiance? Never even played it. As for Morrowind, a game for a no-lifer who enjoys reading a boring, 9000 page novel. Oh, did I also mention it has cheap animations? Stonekeep, a 1995 game, has better combat animations then this piece of trash.
