Help! Pvt sparkle is trying to kill me!

Jeez. What did I ever do to her??? Seriously, whenever I approach Sparkle or Balbrak they go hostile. I've played through this game several times already and never had this problem, but this is the first time I've run it on my new machine. It doesn't matter if I leave and come back or go back to an earlier save, they are always evil.

Anyone else ever have this problem? Oh, I am playing with the latest patch.

Evidently, you've upset the Umpani. Check your journal for your faction standing. As to how you managed to get into trouble, there's numerous ways for that to happen. One thing I did once was taking the flag from outside the fort (instead of buying one at the bar). Nobody seemed to care until I got inside, and then only selected Umpani turned hostile. Naturally, once I returned fire, it turned into the Alamo in a hurry.

That's not it.

My faction rating is fine
I bought the flag, but they attack me whether I have it or not. None of the other Umpani attack me.

if you've done any of the T'rang quests, it may be that some gossip has gotten to the Umps.
Another thing could be that you accidentally hit an Ump during combat, and that one died (doesn't have to be of your accidental hit).
In any case, just approach Balbrak with a quest item (eg T'rang hand) attached to your cursor so you give it to him before any conversation starts.
Otherwise, maybe a reinstall is necessary...

Huh? What flag is this? I've never seen such a thing.

The guard that first talks to you outside the fort is standing next to a flagpole. Hit the crank and down comes the flag.

and you get a second chance to leave it there-Panrack warns you if you just lower the flag. If you touch it again, the Umps turn red...
