System Shock 2: A Greatest Game Of All Times @ GameSpot

GameSpot has chosen to add 'System Shock II' to their "The Greatest Games of All Time" line-up. Check it out right here.
Long before Grand Theft Auto established the video game sandbox, before "emergent gameplay" was an industrywide buzzword, upstart developer Irrational Games married first-person action akin to that of Doom and Half-Life with rich, open-ended character development and a masterfully crafted, horror-tinged storyline to create System Shock 2.

word is that's a misnomer. apparently it sold very well.

I never played it when it came out. I tried playing it after all the buzz I heard but I couldn't get SS1 past the intro movie because of DOS issues and XP and SS2 started bugging me with its shortened 1st person screen. What I mean is that when you turn you realize the area you are in is smaller than what you see in front of you. Its something you saw alot in early freeform "3d" and VRML.

Not many statisics either way. #1,530 in Computer & Video Games on Amazon.com, which is not really that good, but I guess it could be worse.

Hmmm...only 1500 sold? I heard it was 15,000 back in the day.

I wonder how much I could get for it on ebay? I have the original box, virtually untouched, as well as all the materials it came with.

Such a great game. That SS Rebirth mod rocked. Made me go through the game a second time.

Perhaps System Shock 2 sold reasonably well, but definitely not to blockbuster levels. Shock 2 did not sell well in the first weeks and did level up only after the price was already reduced. A shame that EA has locked up the franchise but i'm really looking forward to Bioshock - go irrational go.

No, I think it ranks in 1,500th position on Amazon. Amazon does not account for all sales.

Some games are heavily pirated, and thusly many people play the game and give it favorable opinions of the net, but it doesn't lead to the company making enough money to do sequels.

Looking Glass Studios and Irrational have made some good games, and I'm glad we'll see Bioshock come out as a spiritual successor if nothing else.
