Important Question: Simple Character Build for a New Player? |
|
Hello all, just bought Morrowind: GOTY, and I'm wondering...
What is a simple, yet fun build for a first character?
I've already spent some time fiddling with mages and barbarians and theives, but they all wind up unable to survive in the world. My theives cannot hide, my mages have poor accuracy, and my warriors simply cannot deal enough damage. I am sure there are uber builds, but they would take ages to become fun. I've already got the hang on installing mods* if some of those would help.
Idealy, I would have a summoner who's summons can still be effective during the later parts of the game OR an archer who wil not need anything else except a bow.
If anyone can help, I'd love it. I play Arcanum a lot, so I have experience with the differences and requirements to be a good fighter/mage/theif/summoner.
*I currently have Smooth Bodies, Better Heads, Morrowind Complete FINAL, Fishing Academy, Month Bugfix, and a mod that stops those assassins from mauling you early game. |

I'm not really a fan of magic in games and never tend to take the stealthy option, so I can only really help with a straight-up fighter. But anyway, here's an Uber-warrior for you:
Orcish male, born under the Sign of The Lady. Custom class:
Combat focus, with primary attributes of Strength and Endurance.
Major skills: Long Blade, Heavy Armour, Armourer, Block and Marksman.
Minor skills: Security, Speechcraft and 3 other skills you think look fun.
This character will have 85 Endurance, so you start with lots of hit points. If you can manage a x5 boost each level, you'll have 100 Endurance by level four, which will give you the maximum possible hit points per level, and make your heavy armour very resilient.
Basic policy: if it moves, hit it. If it doesn't move, hit it until it moves then see above. Don't bother with stealth, just wade right in.

And now my thoughts on the specific type of character you're after:
Marksman is fun. Really, really fun! But you just can't avoid melee at times - while you can hold people off with arrows, if enough people attack you, in too-small a space, you'll need to switch weapons.
If you want to travel light, a good short blade seems like the right complement to a bow - although any melee weapon would be fine.
I think summons get less interesting as the game goes on - once you get to a certain point they don't help out all that much. However, it's fun to summon a big beastie, fire one arrow into a bad guy, and sit back and watch the carnage!
The more magicka you have the longer the duration you can summon things for, so a high Intelligence is a must. You might want to consider a Breton, a High Elf, or the sign of The Atronach to get an intrinsic magicka bonus, but beware of the drawbacks!
Here are some suggestions for a possible character, although as I'm no expert someone will probably need to correct me:
Possible races:
Dark Elf (Destruction, Short Blade, Fire Resistance)
Wood Elf (Marksman, Light Armour)
Birthsigns:
The Ritual (Heal, Turn Undead)
The Mage (increased magicka, no bad effects)
The Shadow (temporary invisibility)
Useful skills:
Marksman
Light Armour
Conjuration (for summons)
Destruction (ranged damage)
Security (picking locks)
Short Blade (melee weapon)
Alteration (water walking, levitation)
Speechcraft
Primary attributes:
Probably Intelligence and Agility
Focus:
Probably Magic _________________ Charlie Dobbie
