Gah, Bill Hicks was right (Anyone in marketing & advertising? Kill yourself!)
US and European publishers are ruining the industry right now. It amazes me how long these companies can stick to a business model that (a) isn't working (see last year's sales figures) and (b) has no prospect for expansion of the market, when successful examples exist in all other entertainment media and in the Japanese games industry. Idiots! Excuse me for a moment...
Ahhh, that's better... anyway, did anyone catch that speech Jason Rubin made at the 2004 DICE Summit? Basically shouting about how publishers are messing the whole thing up and how developers should be shown more respect. I've been trying to download it, but something's wrong with my PC and IE keeps crashing - if you have a look around at any of the major gaming sites you should be able to find it (I thik Gamespy has a download). Anyone interested in the state of the industry will probably find it worthwhile. Not related to RPGs specifically, but it's this wider issue that's responsible for the dearth of quality RPGs right now. |

Dearth? Nice spelling. People are going to think you are slow if you continue to spell like that. Try to be more like me, my prose flow like magic and my spelling is always perfection.
You wouldn't happen to have a link to that article would you? _________________ Vegitarian is the Indian word for lousey hunter. |

Er, what's wrong with spelling dearth like that?
It's a much more common variation than derthe (Middle English) or derth (obsolete). |

I know. I liked the use of the word. I like words that are uncommon. I figured Piln would understand what I meant, since she has read through a lot of my posts and knows my prose is equivalent to an illiterate immigrant and my four month old daughter probably spells better than I do.
If I take my time and put a lot of effort into it I can write pretty well (with MSWords aid). But I am definitly not know for my writting ability on this site. It hurts me and other people's opinion of me. I might have some good points and ideas in my post, but the grammar and spelling errors are so glaring and numerous people have no choice but to think less of me and think I am slow. I think less of people that write like that and I am one of them (unless English is not their first language of course). _________________ Vegitarian is the Indian word for lousey hunter. |

What the... ? Not me too!? (double-checks gender icon)
I'll see if I can find a link for the movie file. I had a search at work last night (I should be able to download it there, god knows what's up with my home PC) - Gamespy used to have it, but they've taken it off their public servers
I did see lots of links to interviews with Rubin about his speech, so I'll grab some links for those and try again to find the actual footage. |

I agree, the Fall looks great besides the rt combat. Besides that I have no idea. The new Paradise Cracked looks pretty good maybe (havent looked into it much) I think its called something Law. I also heard something about a Jagged Alliance 3, but maybe that was just a pole. My memory isn't what it used to be. I wish they made a harn rpg. There used to be one in development but it got nixed. All in all, a story heavy non-linear rpg with good combat does not seem to be in development in the near or far off future. So it looks like games aimed at 8th graders are what we are left with.
I wish they made a TB option for Gothic. All the moves are all ready timed, adding turns and selected attacks couldn't be that hard I don't think. Maybe add in some character creation. Or better yet incoprorate the Harn rules into a living world like Gothic. _________________ Vegitarian is the Indian word for lousey hunter. |

Dunno if it's practical for you Roqua, but have you considered getting into mod-making? Tools for games are getting better all the time and currently the best bet for building an RPG mod might come from an unlikely source (Far Cry or HL2's Source engine), and there's obviously Morrowind and NWN. Arx Fatalis 2 looks likely to be built with Source, so it might be good for modding when it comes out. But of course, changing a realtime game to turn-based is not likely to be the easiest modding task you could set yourself
Are there any moddable turn-based RPGs? |

Looks interesting. Very retro.
Dag nab it, I say. Finding a working link for Jason Rubin's speech is like finding a neutrino in a haystack. So here is an article about the D.I.C.E. summit, and here is an interview with Rubin a week later.
If anyone can find the movie file, please let me know. My failure to see it is like a nagging voice in my head, threatening to drive me ma.. ...oh, too late. |

Thanks for the links. I am not a modder though. Modding holds no interest for me. I just downloaded Urban Chaos for Jagged Alliance 2 so that will give me my fix for a while. _________________ Vegitarian is the Indian word for lousey hunter. |

You're thinking of COPS 2170: Power of Law (how bad is that "COPS: 2170" bit). What about Metalheart: RR: iso, turn-based, very crisp graphics and Akella have a little bit of experience under the belt so hopefully they're getting better. _________________ Editor @ RPGDot |

Did you play the Ultima series, Roqua? Plenty of remakes about (which reminds me, I need to try Exult)
