Icewind Dale Installation Problem. Need help pls!

Hey there folks!

I've posted this on these forums because I have nowhere to turn to. Black Isle is gone. Interplay only offers self-support so you're my only chance.

A week ago I bought the original Icewind Dale with the Heart of the Winter expansion.

I have a slow computer but fits perfectly in the game requirements.
AMD Duron 800 Mhz, 512 DDRAM, NVidia GeForce 2 mx 440 64MB, latest Video driver, all running on Win XP.

The problem is this.

Although on the second disc and the third (H.o.t.W.) the autorun works just great, on the first and real installer I get an error message such as "Windows bla bla bla has found an error and needs to close."

So, the autorun does not work. I;ve tried running setup.exe and here comes the big surprise. At 99% extracting I get the weirdest error:
"Setup requires at least 3747 Mb to store temporary files. bla bla bla. Error 101."

This is weird because on every partition, including the system's I have at least 4Gb free.

Even more weird is the fact that the game works great on other systems, but not on mine, and for sure I want to play this game.

Any suggestions, you folks got this kind of error before.

PS: I was suggested to try differnt ( older and newer ) video adapter drivers. No result. Well actually I got a result: characters not showing up in Arx Fatalis so i got back to the latest driver.

Pls help me! Thank you very much!

PS2: Damn I wrote quite a novel here

Just a suggestion : it says 3.7Go for temporary files ( wow ), so you should try on a partition with at least 8Go.

S**t, it was my mistake. I meant to write 3747 Kb, not Mb.
So it requires ~ 4 Mb for the setup ... so space is not the problem, although i keep getting this error.

Well, you should try to uninstall the game ( in control panel ) if he installed something last time, just check. And you should also clean all your temp directories.

It's the first installation and I have no temp files from any other software whatsoever.

I seem to remember similar issues with some games from way back when I still had Win98 but that was a long, long time ago so please don't kill me if this doesn't work .

I seem to remember though that I was able to fix issues like the one you described by playing with the page file (virtual memory) settings.
If you have Win XP then your page file is currently most likely set to a 'User Defined' size of 1024MB or 2048MB. Try changing that and let Windows handle the size of the page file automatically.

In Win98, it was basically the other way around. The default was to let Windows auto-handle the page file size but most people who read tweak guides changed it to a fixed size which did indeed slightly improve performance but there were also a few games/apps where a fixed page file size could cause issues so you had to reset it to let Windows determine the page file size.

Hope that helps .

I've had this problem in the past and sometimes this works. Right click the install disk, right click the install executable, go to properties, go to compatibility and switch the install executable to run in compatibility mode for Windows 98. Then run the install executable.

Also, not to state the obvious, but make sure the disks are clean.

It's worth a try, and I've had this work for me in the past. Good luck!

Moriendor: I'll try this, but I think it won't work. The installer worked just fine on some ultra-performant WinXP gaming stations. I'll still try it.

Sir Markus: I'll try this too. I know my XP is set on user defined.

I'll tell you tomorrow about the results.

Thank you all.
