Gee, "cutting the mustard" is becoming the standard phrase round here...

My advice is to try to relate to the game-world. If you can manage it, read all the books you come across. Try to play a role that fits with the Elder Scrolls mythos. Xanathar's library may be helpful there... www.m0use.net/~xanathar

You may find that the game becomes very easy after 15/20 levels so don't worry about power gaming.

The game will have more life if you can use the construction set, but it looks quite daunting...

"Cutting the mustard" is better than 'cutting the cheese"

Ya know, "cut the mustard" is one of those phrases that has never made sense to me. I was sitting here wondering what it could mean, when it dawned on me that I had the perfect tool right in front of me - the internet!

So, here you go:

Cut the Mustard
The OED2 (the Compact Oxford English Dictionary, 2nd Edition) has it deriving from the slang sense of mustard meaning the best (flavorful, what makes something else taste good). O.Henry uses the word in the 1904 Cabbages and Kings in this fashion. The phrase cut the mustard comes from about the same period, first appearing in print a year earlier. The cut refers to harvesting the plant. If you can't cut the mustard, you can't supply what is best.

Unfortunately, "cutting the cheese" is not listed. Oh, well - I think we can all figure out where that one came from!

Join the Imperial Legion early in the game. Each time you advance, they give you free armor and weapons. Ask the guards which city to find an open in the ranks.

Join all guilds and Great Houses, that way you get training and barter with guid members. And if you're high enough up in a house, you can build your own stronghold.

Role play and be true to that role /character. Create a character you want to play and play it. If you want the challenge to last, role play an honest character - don't steal and/or kill your way to an easy game. Of course, if your aim in life is to sell drugs to kids, be a guard at a concentration camp or a senior executive at a major US corporation, then by all means play an evil character. The game won't be as challenging but who cares, you will be rich and powerful, bwa ha ha. Back to making it challenging - don't use any merchant cheats - although you'll grind your teeth alot at selling Creeper 5000 drakes of stuff a day. Money allows you to make powerful permanent enchantments on items which make it way to easy. Anyone with a permanent chameleon enchantment on anything who complains about game balance/too easy should look in a mirror - permanent chameleon enchantments don't extend to real life. There are factions in the game - decide who you support and follow that path. MW offers more role playing possibilities than any game in a long time. If that is your thing, enjoy; if you prefer tohack and slash your way through a game, that works as well.

I totally agree with most of what has been said in this thread. This is one game where you can do nearly anything. Getting a stronghold should be emphasised, along with the concept of balance. Use your imagination and HAVE FUN.
