I'll reiterate here what I wrote on the ratings screen (plus a little).

This is not a CRPG. It is a turn based strategy game with a focus on the heroes. It is a cross between Warlords and Heroes of Might and Magic. When it first came out I was to engrossed in other games, and so it never really 'caught' me, but I can still appreciate that it was potentially one of the best games of it's genre.

I played through the first four or so scenarios of the campaign and could easily have been hooked - if not for other distractions. The tactical combat is well done and allows a good player to save a bad strategic blunder.

It's the best strategic game ever. You can feel that you a ruler of your kingdom.

Excellent game. The same goes for its two sequels. It is always missing out in making a big killing in terms of earnings because of inconsistent release dates and in some parts of the world, not even released at all. AFAIK, the latest installment - AOW: Shadow Magic is not released in asia, a pity, as they would have digged this game and its fantasy elements. Nice going, Triumph Studios.
