The Claw of Beliar

I've completed the expansion part of the game and have the Claw of Beliar in my possession. I figured I'd try keeping the sword. I found a Shrine of Beliar and chose to improve the sword. After I do so though, the sword seems to vanish from my inventory completely. I can't wield the sword prior to this point as I just get blasted with a lightning bolt if I try.

Is it because I'm a fire magician and can't wield a sword made by an "enemy" god?

** Edit **

After some checking I see what is happening. When I pray for a sword upgrade it's being transformed into the spell I ask for - I can only have one at a time though. I assume more spells will be available in later chapters. Steal energy looks interesting, if I'm guessing right it will take away mana from an enemy and give it to me.

** Edit 2**

Correction, steal energy looked interesting but seems to be worthless. I tried it on an Orc Shaman and it didn't seem to affect his health or my health/mana. Surrendering the blade only gets me 2000 exp though so I'm not sure what the best course of action is.

I'm not sure what to do with my character at the moment. I'm now just entering the valley of mines again. My character is a fire mage and can take down an orc with a barrage of ice lances - however I only have enough mana to take out one Orc at a time. My weapons skills aren't good enough to take on an Orc in melee combat. I do still have a magic crossbow from the expansion area though. I'm considering boosting my strength so that I can use it and be an archer/mage.

You figured it out ... I liked using Beliar's Wrath, until I got 'Cry of the Dead' - I ate up a whole crew of lizards on the final island with that ... of course, it eats *all* your mana, but you can compensate by carrying loads of potions

I was disappointed as well until I realized what I got in return.

Yes you can have only one beliar rune at same time and yes the only one that really worth it is the too powerfull cry of death. Steal energy lower the attack/damage of your oponent.

About the magic crossbow don't dream too much it is using only magic bolt and you found 10 . Crossbow is secondary weapon, you have no way to know that, so some explanations:
It has STR requirement but for efficiency, from damages to range it uses DEX. That means that you need rise both STR and DEX, not the good choice.

If you want try archer/mage go for DEX, bows and eventually dex swords. That could work nicelly with summoning, dunno I didn't tried.
