I recently replayed System Shock (the original) in Dosbox and it's definitely NOT to be missed!!

Thanks for the recommend corwin, but it's already on the list...you wouldn't happen to have a demo, would you?
That much aside, some very nice members pointed me in the right direction for an Arcanum demo (which was not on the list, but I still wanted), an Icewind Dale demo, a demo for Shattered Lights (blah!), and one for Neuro Hunter (also earns a blah!).
Oh, and I would like to thank DoomHamm3r, again, for directing me to a Gothic II demo (which serves perfectly well in lieu of a Gothic demo). Just on a side note, the game did look interesting, and I am certain I would enjoy it...were it not for the interface and controls. I tend to like first-person games better, but that is not really an issue that will dissuade me from playing a third-person viewed game; however, the jerky sidesteps, the "move-your-mouse-in-a-direction-to-attack" thing, and the insane camera just ruined it for me.
Who knows, maybe Gothic III will be different? I'll check it out when it gets here... |

If you liked RotH (there is a fansite on the net somewhere, yeah), you might like Clive Barker's Undying - I bet 3DGamers have a demo (if you don't own the game already). Similar setting, premises and atmosphere. The only later game which came close...
TTLG (www.ttlg.com, a Looking Glass games fansite) had a demo of System Shock 1, you might want to look there.

Clive Barker's Undying? Nope, it's a new one by me. Thanks for the recommend, Jaz, I'll check it out.
EDIT: Superb! 3DGamers does have a demo! I'm downloading it now...
Well, I couldn't find the demo for System Shock on Through the Looking Glass, however, I did manage to find a demo for System Shock 2 (which will serve just as well, as, at the price most people tell me it is nowawadays, I am sure I could convince my parents to get both 1 and 2 if I choose them)!
Also, I chanced across demos for Vampire the Masquerade, Metal Heart: Replicant's Rampage, Gorky Zero, and Jagged Alliance 2!
Thank you all for your help thus far, and again, any help in finding demos for the rest will be greatly appreciated. |

Well, I'm already done with the System Shock 2 demo, and not really that interested in playing a demo of the first. Thanks for the notice anyway, but for now I'll pass.
Also, I checked the Advent Rising homepage and asked the creators at Majesco if there was a demo; they said that neither they nor the European distributor (Vivendi) would be releasing a demo for the PC. Oh well... |

Did you try both controls schemes for Gothic 2? The "alternate" version is pretty FPS friendly. The Gothic series takes some adjusting to, but if you commit 3 or 4 hours to it you get can get very hooked . I've got 2 coworkers that have tried Gothic 2. One gave up after an hour (very short attention span, hates RPG's, loves FPS's), the other coworker no longer sleeps 
Also lets not forget Morrowind.

I own the collectors edition myself, and am eagerly awaiting the release of Oblivion; I take it you're a fan too, right?
As to Gothic, well, I didn't know there was an alternative control scheme...I'll give it a try (of course, that means redownloading the demo, but that's no big deal). How exactly do you access the "alternate" version you spoke of?
EDIT: I also just found demos for Soul Reaver 2, Majesty, and Gorasul: Legacy of the Dragon on GZDownloads (an obscure, but apparently thriving, download archive a fellow member referred me to; thanks!).
EDIT II: More news on the demo seeking front; I stopped by the official Black and White forums at Lionhead Studios site and inquired after a demo. I was told that "there is not and will not be a demo for Black & White, as the gameplay is too extensive to encapsulate in a readily available downloadable size." One more down, I suppose.
Frankly, I believe strongly in the demo as a method of advertisement and customer satisfaction. I mean, come on, as a fifteen-year old who only gets an average of a hundred bucks a month (paper route, odd jobs, and allowance combined) I don't want to blow half of that on a game that stinks; being able to play a demo beforehand lets me know if the game is something I feel like owning...you know, if it intrigues me or it simply is not something I would be interested in.
For instance, I just got the demo for Wars and Warriors: Joan of Arc; it's one of those "edutainment" titles, the kind that are supposed to teach you something while you play...and generally bore you to death in doing so. However, I actually found myself enjoying the game, and plan to purchase a copy of it when it comes out. With things like Advent Rising (which does not have a demo), I am incredibly unlikely to buy it, because all I have to go on are poor reviews and some "gameplay movies" which only show you what they (the creators) want you to see. I mean, come on! No "gameplay movie" would be able to let you know if the title has some horrible bugs, nasty control scheme, poor storyline, or anything of the sort; and, frankly speaking, I don't want to take someone elses word for it (that is, I generally disbelieve "professional" reviewers; e.g. - GameSpot, GameSpy, etcetera). What I want, in the end, is a chance to see for myself. Is that so much to ask?
EDIT III: Alright, I revised the list, writing down only those games which have been released, and may have a demo. I have checked the homepage for each game, and found none; and checked the database for each, and found none; and checked each site noted herein, and found none. Thus, if anyone knows of demos for any game on the new list, please let me know. Thank you! |

For Gothic 2 the alternate controls are listed as "alternate controls" somewhere in the options - probably under "customize controls" or something. Not hard to find. I can't recommend Gothic 2 enough.
As far as demo's go, its a very frustrating trend that MS games doesnt participate - which of course invites alot of people to "do the wrong thing" just to try out the game before buying. I'm sure many don't buy it once its on their harddrive. Frankly, its a stupid and frustrating policy by Microsoft. Fable, Dungeon Siege etc. really need demos.

franlky for a game like fable it is good to have a demo, because if I played it before hand I would have never picked it up...
so demos are good, just my 2 cents:)

Wow, it's been quite some time since last I stopped by and updated this thread.
On the demo front, I managed to acquire some old PCGamer ship-discs with exclusive demos (covering some of the titles I had listed), and found an old Fallout 2 demo...however, none of that really matters any more as my birthday has come and gone. For anyone who cares, I recieved a copy of Evil Islands (a demo of which was requested in this thread, and a copy of which was given to me, thanks!), and have been thrilled thus far. It is anything other than a "hardcore" rpg (in fact, it's almost a dungeon-crawler), however, I needed a break from serious roleplaying and have been pleased with the results.
So, I suppose that wraps it up. If you happen to find a copy of any of the demos left in my first post, feel free to drop me a line, otherwise... |
