RPGDot Feature: Ad Personam Todd Howard |
|
We asked Todd Howard, Executive Producer at Bethesda Softworks, some personal questions about his likes in gaming, music and more - in the revival of our Ad Personam interviews. One answer might be of special interest for those following the future of the Elder Scrolls series (although: this answer could hint to a completely different game, of course):

RPGDot: If you could do any game, regardless of money and developing time, what would it be?

Todd Howard: We're starting a game here at Bethesda that is my ultimate game, so I can't say what it is yet.
Well, let's start speculating *g*. To read the rest of the interview, just follow our link. |

I think y'all should probe a little bit deeper with those questions. These seemed kind of, well, surface scratching. Ask em what their vision is for gaming/RPG gaming 10, then 5, then 3 years into the future. Ask em what they think the single worst character trait is to have in a development team member. Ask em what they have found to be the single most useful piece of education or skill in their career. Ask em how they acquired the ability to manage a team or be a leader (did it come through trial and error or were they more prepared?). Ask em where inspiration comes from. How do they like to recharge or re-orient themselves outside their life's work? What do they find most difficult about the development process?

Hi Bedwyr,
good to see you here .
Well, the questions were chosen pretty carefully. We asked the participating parties to forward the questions to as many people as possible within their respective companies.
That's why we tried to keep the questions on a more general level. You're right. A producer/designer might have more to say than the cleaning maid but you just have to draw the line somewhere.
The "Ad Personam" feature is not directed towards producers/designers only. It's a series of features. The questions have been posed to all sorts of folks in the gaming industry.
The questions may have been a bit too "surface scratching" for someone as Todd Howard but, really, what should an "ordinary programmer" reply to *your* question, saying "Ask em how they acquired the ability to manage a team or be a leader (did it come through trial and error or were they more prepared?)."
Not everyone is leading a team. Some people are "only" part of a team. An important part, nonetheless. Not sure if I can speak for everyone at RPGDot but we surely didn't want to differentiate between people's positions. Even the cleaning maid plays a very impotant role. That's why the questions are not always fitting the position of a certain person but are kept at a general level. Hope you understand . |

As an established game company, with huge fan base and several previously successful games, certainly they are always working on something. And definitely not loitering around doing nothing.
I think they're doing some conceptual planning for next TES game. A whole new game? - less likely. |
