In theory... (SPOILERS)
   

In theory, you could not get the away camp to pop up. As soon as you got one artifact, couldn't you just put it in Ascension peak, then do the same with the next artifact. Would that screw up the game or not?

No problem from that. I did that in a solo game--i set my Portal in the temple where you put the DD so i could get it there directly to avoid insane time. Then i went back to get the other 2 from a chest i had put them in (Rapax Castle) The Away Camp, like many other things, is not necessary to finish the game.
