I'll try Arx and see if I like it. It seems to be highly praised by several sources.
Gorath - What would you personally suggest? I would personally respect any recommendation you might have. Your a very well known poster on this site. I value your opinions highly. I think others might as well.

This may be a bit off subject. I noticed a lot of new MMORPG's being released. I just have two questions regarding this:
Do all MMORPG's require you to pay a monthly fee, like Everquest does?
If you have a MMORPG to recommend, which one would it be?
(I played Everquest for about 6 years. I stopped playing it about 1 year ago. I was overwhelmingly frustrated at the fact that the game is designed so its nearly impossible for you to solo after a certain level. In EQ for example, even as a Wizard, from level 40 to 60 its almost impossible to find good mobs to kill alone. The game not only encourages, but requires you to group with other players in order to kill mobs at mid to high levels. Everquest is a really great game, it just has that one aspect I personally can't extract any enjoyment from.)

If you liked Eq-kind-of-gameplay but thought it was flawed in som aspects, you should try Daoc. Daoc is like everquest done right.
Not that i like evercamp games at all. Boring. Too bad almost all current mmorpgs are similar to the them. Gotta wait for the new mmorpgs which have som real roleplaying included instead of the pure hack'n'slash level/eq-quest gameplay. |

A tale in teh desert is free for trial now on their website. I think there is an session up right now.
And about LotR. There is no challenge in it, it's to short and if you are a LotR freak like me, you will not like the game. Especially not if you are into games like NWN.
It might be worth a shot though, it's kind of similiar to Gothic, allthough it's liniar (sp?).
I don't have time to write a review of the game, to much homework and now to go to my 1 hour long strength training... _________________ There once was a youngster, DzD

I know it's not a *recent* game; but the closest game to gothic is surely
Ultima IX : ascension. ( I wonder in what extent Piranha Bytes based Gothic on it ?!)
It's just bigger, and a lot more ambitious. And it is nowdays playable with actual hardware configuration. ( and latest patches !! )
I just finished it ! And all I have to say is : WOW !
Seems Gothic II should have nearly the size of U9. ( they claim 9 hours of spoken dialogue but I wonder how it is for U9 ?!!)
IMO, these games are not really RPGs ( more action-adventure ) but they are the future ! |

Also not recent, but if you have never played it, grab Outcast from the bargain bin - its not fantasy (more sci-fi with fantasy elements) its not even a RPG (rather an action adventure with some power-ups) but the "aliveness" of the world, the free-form exploring and interactiveness of NPCs reminded me a lot of this game when I first started Gothic.
Graphics are terribly low-res, but not bad once you get used to them. Its been one of my greatest gaming experiences, but the game got little attention at the time.
And of course Morrowind is the coolest |

If you haven't played it, I definately recommend OUTCAST!
I'm replaying it myself while waiting for Gothic II. It's a little old, but well worth playing. The music is outstanding, Huge world, ton's of gameplay.
I was actually going to post it as a suggestion myself, Good choice GhanBuriGhan! |

Oh, thanks for your kind words.
Unfortunately I´m not qualified to give recommendations about new games because I didn´t find the time to play in the last 15 months. The only games I played for more than a few hours are:
NOLF (excellent)
Max Payne (nice)
Hitman (brilliant)
DS (boring)
Summoner (better than DS but the lengthy walks kill it)
I have Morrowind and NWN here and wait for good deals for Arx and Divinity. Played none of them yet.
From what I hear I conclude that Arx is the most original (in the way of not generic) of the later RPGs. Of course originality can be two edged ...
Lanael is right about Ultima Ascension. It´s the game which comes closest to Gothic. I liked it but I think Gothic beats it in every aspect.
I bet PB played it for quite some time. _________________ Webmaster GothicDot |

Its always about "what made you like gothic?"...
Personally, I loved the freedom to go wherever I wanted, do whatever I wanted, and had a world that reacted to what I did.
If I say "Morrowind", I would actually be lying, since Morrowind never reacted to what you did. You walked around in huge landscapes, saw thousands of people, yet feel very, very lonely, since the "people" never reacted to your actions, more than being walking signposts.
If I say "Fallout 2" I would be right on the spot. Fallout 2 is still one of the best RPG's I played, for its complete freedom and a world that was shaped around you depending upon what you do with your freedom. It is a totally different engine, with a totally different interface, but the things I loved in Gothic are all in Fallout 2.

After that, I wish to reccomend you to take a look at S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Oblivion Lost. A futuristic FPS/RPG, soon to be released. To quote the authors:
"...We rejected the linear level-to-level passage in favour of such freedom of action and movement as seen in 'Elite', 'Daggerfall' and 'Fallout'. Players will travel an immense territory of a zone stretching for 20 square kilometers, explore it, gain money and experience, move along a free "non-stiff" story line towards the game final..."
http://www.stalker-game.com (It is also the most beautiful game ever, placed next to Doom III in many aspects (Doom3 have no outdoor areas, so it is difficult to compare them)). |

Ah... Gothic is my second favorite game... because Outcast is still the first. It's a good choice: the aspect I loved above all in Gothic was the «living» world... a thing that we meet in Outcast.
If not, until Gothic 2... there's the super demo. Believe me: you will need many days to «really» finish it. (because the demo's zone is not truely restricted and in fact is really huge). |
