My question is: "why do you play PC games?".
I suppose most of you like mainly RPGs, so why do you play them?

My answer is:
I really like heroes and old times when you could be "knight".
I really like it when good is strong and evil is beaten.
And I am really unhappy that today are not good days for heroes, for big things, just for *normal* life...

You can have adventures without ever being in real danger...
Personally, in RPGs (computer or not) I always astonish myself time and again by playing idiotically brave or at least good (which doesn't necessarily exclude cowardly) characters.
Perhaps business life with all its necessary and unnecessary evils demands a compensation.
I remember having played really nasty characters when I was still at school...

To get away from the normal, boring world and travel to days of long ago, from uncharted regions of the universe...comes a legend, the legend of Voltron: Defender of the Universe! Hehe, sorry, got kinda carried away there.  (for those who don't know, Voltron was a cartoon from the 80's, in the U.S. and was even made into a pc game, though I heard it was poorly done)
Seriously, I see it as a form of escapism, to be another person of heroic proportions, to explore a large, untamed virtual fantasy world. Also I think being into pen and paper rpgs such as D&D back when I was 10 really got me interested in the whole fantasy genre and I've been interested in it ever since. Though I have to admit, I don't have quite as much enthusiasm for games as I did back when I was younger and first experiencing it. It takes more complexity and depth in games to interest me now, while simple crpg's in the past(such as Wizardry 1) were enough to satisfy me.
I remember first discovering crpg's back when I was a young kid and walked into a hobby shop where they also sold computer games in the early 80's. I was just in awe of the cover art on some of these(such as the Phantasie series from SSI).
Also as you said, having good defeat evil is very satisfying and gives me a good feeling, unfortunately, some people play to be evil and have evil defeat good. And that worries me more than a little bit.  |

I play CRPGs because it's a lot easier than trying to wrangle people up to play pen and paper. 
I like CRPGs because they're fun. They don't require any sort of thought, like a pen and paper game does. You just play, read, and enjoy. It's sort of like reading an interactive fantasy novel.

I have to agree. CRPGs are a great way to blow off some steam and escape into a great story for awhile. It's far better than television or even a book due to your ability to interact with the story. And it's only getting better as games become more open-ended. |

I can live without playing. I first started in 84 with pacman. Then I became dependant on it 
Not only rpgs I play. Also tpp, fpp, simulators, adventures,.......

The human mind seems to look for easy solutions to basic needs. In today's complex world, the computer game (for many people) is a quick, easy, effective escape for boredom and the problems of modern life. Some people go fishing, some whittle, some drink ... others play computer games.
For me (and I suspect others) it engages the brain in a way that makes time pass and allows me to forget (for a time) the problems of modern life. As others have said, it also allows me (for a short time) to pretend that good can triumph over evil or indeed that there is even such a thing as good.

well... for the same reasons as you and the adventuring without being in danger.... but i dont like sci-fi rpgs... i dont like futuristic games with robots and stuff!

i love games in general: board games; card games (Skat, Doppelkopf) and computer games and,.. well... hmmm ... maybe i am addicted to crpgs - just can't stop playing them. old ones, new ones i don't care - if there are fun to play i *must* beat them. It started with the Bards Tale series ...

For me it's the freedom. IN console RPG's th path always seems to be set in stone, but in a lot of PC one's, I have the freedom to do what I want. Fallout, Deus Ex, Balders Gate 2, Daggerfall etc, all have huge replay value, and also let be behave as I want. If I want to be the ultimate hero, it was my choice. Wanted to be a Han Solo type, also possible. An evil SOB, no problem. I enjoy that in games. |
