Oh, I am sick of MUDs.. I played one from 1996-2000, even had a god on it for quite some time, but.. After logging 5500+ hours on it I realized what a major time stealer it was and quit. Imagine if I had put those hours into something worthwhile instead? AGH!

Sorry to be picky, but Outcast is absolutely not an RPG. There's no character creation, character leveling or character development, just acquiring new and better stuff. It's a fantastic game, though.

I would love an RPG/MMPRPG set in the "Nights Dawn" Universe (Hamilton Novels) The confederation world that is created in them is so more "rea" than star wars..............

BTW I will be creating a new post on this topic, I just thought a comment here was relevent because it was while reading this post the idea occured to me..............

SF RPG's

I tend to agree with nearly all of what is posted here.

A few of us have been discussing this very thing for about a year now.

What we wanted was a "Baldurs Gate In Space" type game.

Start off with a crate for a spaceship, add to your crew (Gunner, Pilot, Navigator etc) all with stats. Travel the void and also go planetside.

I had heard rumours that "Traveller" was being developed as a PC game....not sure though...haven't heard anything for yonks.

Maybe now, with the advent of such concepts as Neverwinter and Gothic, which come with their own editors, over time, with some clever programmers creating different skins, weapons etc, the "Neverwinter" engine (for example) could be used to create a really good SF/Cyber/whateveryoufancy type module.

It would be nice to have access to the Fallout editor as a tool....

Regards,

Hexmaster

I think that's a great idea! Your ship's prowess in combat would be determined by your crew's skills; the gunner would increase Rate of Fire and accuracy, the pilot determines evasion %, the science personnell at developing and modifying ship systems. It could be a faux-real-time combat system against spaceships and space beasts, and perhaps your ship should also be able to cruise in planets...

To make things interesting, your crew may also have to go on planetside missions, and they all have stats that determine how well they do in personal (non spaceship) combat; this would neccesitate a decision as to whether to develop your crew's spaceship abilities or normal combat abilities!

Of course, a broad explorable universe would be great, and the size could be limited by a system of jumpgates, so that there are only a certain number of jumpgates (or hypergates, whatever) in the galaxy that limits you to a number of systems that you can explore (otherwise, no programmer would tackle a whole UNIVERSE of creation ).

Sounds like it could be cool, if someone does it...

More non-fantasy RPG's would be excellent.

Ekim, I'm not sure I agree that Star Wars dominates the market quite that much or that LOTR is limited to a small fanbase. LOTR has been enchanting readers since 1956 (and the Hobbit predates that by more than 20 years).

I'm sure I read a comment by Feargus Urquhart that fantasy products are simply more popular (ie. sell more) than other alternatives (unfortunately I can't back this up at the moment). I can't think of an outstanding modern space RPG to use as a comparison but certainly products like BG2 have hugely outsold products such as PS:T or even the beloved Fallout. Bearing in mind that two of these products used the same engine, all had the same publisher and PS:T and Fallout had outstanding reviews surely it must be the source material that proved more popular with BG2.

I think it's also fair to say that fantasy is strong in PnP so it's natural to see this transcribed to the computer game arena.

There are *lots* of Sci-Fi MMORPG in development (Anarchy Online, Bigworld: Citizen Zero, Dark Sector, Endless Ages, Neocron, Project Entropia and Redmoon to name some). They don't seem to be scared of a Star Wars comparison.

I think one of the problems is that a lot of money is going into developing MMORPG (a risky business) that publishers are looking for relatively safe bets with the rest of their finances and fantasy (particularly D&D) provides strong sales. The most consistent RPG house in recent years has been BIS; obviously financing was a part of the decision to produce IWD2 (a known engine and quantifiable market).

It seems to me the smaller European developers (Gothic, Arx) are more prepared to take risks these days so maybe we can look forward to one of these developers filling the gap.

In the meantime I'll look forward to Deus Ex 2 and Lionheart. I might even give Sea Dogs 2 a go.
