Ditto. If I had to pick one, it would be Soule's IWD. Interestingly (according to his website), Soule's company has produced music for more games than any other composer/company.

My personal favorite was the music in Might and Magic VI. I can not recall the composer though.

Not all games have music in MP3 or WAV format. Other soundtrack CDs have music that is remixed and actually better than the in-game music (such as the Deus Ex soundtrack CD, for example). Besides, if I see two versions of the game for a very similar price, why not get the one with the soundtrack CD?

Hmmm, I must be getting old. My favorite game music resides in Ultima IV and Daggerfall. Ultima IV's wanderer theme is locked into my memory until the end of time. Daggerfall had such a variety of music that all seemed appropriate. Of the newer games I'll give a nod to the main theme of Morrowind and the chorale parts of Divine Divinity. Both of these got the gaming juices flowing. Jeremy Soule nailed the feel of Morrowind with the
opening theme, although the rest of the music in Morrowind is unimpressive
and, as mentioned already, becomes extremely repetitive. I never listen to
music past the first 15-20 hours of a game. I'll turn it on when I enter new areas, just to see if I hear something new, but other than that I keep it off.

Is MDK a good game? I was looking at it on amazon, but couldn't decide whether it was worth buying...

By the way, I really liked Soule's Total Annihilation theme. That was k3w1.

Wow this is a tough one. Being a fan of film and "incidental" music in general, I do pay attention to the music in games.

Of recent games, I'd say Dungeon Seige has the best score. The actual "theme" is kinda generic and cookie cutter, but the other music is outstanding (were talking by game standards here). Jeremy Soule is obviously influenced by John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith and other film composers.

Enclave also has some good, if not over-the-top music. My favorite theme in that game is the one that plays during the Mines and the Divded City level. Overall, the whole score has a very Wagnerish operatic feel.

Gothic's music also deserves mention for its understated and atmospheric greatness. From what I heard in the Demo, Gothic 2 looks like it will follow in the same vein.

But what is the best of ALL time? If I had to pick one CRPG game that had consistenly memorable music I'd have to say Ultima VII. There are just so many enchanting and haunting melodies in that game. I'll never forget walking into Skara Brae for the first time and hearing the "haunted ghost" theme while the Guardian laughed in the background. Great stuff.

My favorite "walking around" theme of all time is from Might and Magic III, though.

For all of those of you that love Diablos soundtrack, I think youŽll be happy to know thereŽs a module for NWN that recreates Diablo. Complete with movies, sounds and music.

Can you supply a link? Sounds like it could be cool enough to try and get a copy at home for those (very few) nights when I feel like mucking around with a non serious game.

I'm one of those people who normally brush off the music in games and I even turn my speakers down real low alot of the time, but a few games have made me take notice with their music. The only 2 I can think of right now are Morrowind with the main theme, especially when you start hearing it again toward the end (I think), and Planescape Torment with the music in the Fortress of Regret.

Arcturus: MDK is a highly entertaining action game (okay, so *I* found it highly entertaining), and pretty weird .
Another all-time favorite game soundtrack comes to my mind... The Dig by Michael Land. Still no CRPG.

I like the Amiga - Ambermoon Soundtrack

use the DELI-Player for playing the tunes:

you can find the famous Xenon 2 Megablast songs here, too.
