Give me your opinion...

Hey all! I'm looking into picking up a copy of KOTOR...but I need to know what the game's all about. I have read the official site, but wanted to see what you fellow RPGdotters have to say. I've browsed some of the threads here, but wanted to get a firsthand account.

So, what I want to know is...

What's your most/least favorite thing about the game?
What RPG would you compare it to?
Will my Nvidia Ti4200 even run the game!?

And any other info you feel may help myself or someone else thinking of purchasing it! Thanks for your input(s)!

Most F: Dialogs are just hilarious, very good story line, some interesting sub-quests, nice NPCs, some nice puzzles, high re-play value.

Least F: lack of balance between ranged and melee, hmm... come to think there is not that many, except maybe when you try to avoid combat; you have selected one character and while you running away from the fight your NPCs are running towards the enemy, but when you select one of them to disengage battle mode the protagonist is already running towards fighting. I guess what I want to say is that maybe the game is tactic less.

Its third person view (unless you press CAPS LOCK, then you have first person), some might see small resemblance to Gothic. (BTW there is no jumping)

It's a great game, one of the two best I've played in the past year (Gothic2 was the other). I've played it twice (once for each approach). I rarely replay games immediately, so that says a LOT. Get it, you'll really enjoy the experience. The assassin droid alone is worth the price of the game.

Thanks for the responses. Sauron, what i meant about my vid card was, I saw in the tech support thread here that Nvidia Ti cards may be buggy for the game..

Proud to report I have put a bid in on Ebay for KOTOR..

I run the game maxed out on my gf4 ti 4200, no problems at all. definitely an awesome game, best of 2003 IMHO.

Excellent story.

I give it very high marks.

And I didnt like NWN much which was similar. Thats the game youre looking for that it is like.

Its just exciting and well made. Cant dislike it even if you try in my opinion. Its one of the very few games I think almost all gamers would enjoy, and I think its brilliant just for that feature.

More involving than any crpg I played in 2003 actually. I like gothic 2 more but its not more involving.

Very hard to explain that. Gothic 2 gameplay is more interesting but its story is very boring in comparison.

And I dont know why were comparing the two games, other than that they were both very good games released in 2003....

To be honest, I'm really only interested in the game because of it's Star Wars connection. I am a big fan of the franchise, and played SW:G for a while after it first came out. I could just never buy into the fact that you have to subscribe to play. I like to buy a game and be done spending money on it!

So, when you say it's like NWN, how do you mean? I know it's a party based RPG, and the combat looks to be basically turn based (you queue up your orders and fight, right?). I didn't care much for NWN, I hope the storyline here is enough to keep me going!

They were basically built with similar engines is all that means. So, gameplay can feel sort of the same. I also noticed emotes that looked like they were taken straight from NWN.

Val's definitely right but I wouldn't worry about it too much. The graphics are much better and it's a different perspective but there's slightly something familiar about the style and the animation. I've taken a little while to warm up to it but it's worth playing, especially for a Star Wars fan. If there's one thing it gets right more than anything it's the total Star Wars atmosphere.

There's a major plot similarity to NWN too, but that develops much later. If Lucas turned the game into a film, it would rival the original!!

Out of curiousity, how many of you that own and play KOTOR did it because you are a Star Wars fan? Alternatively, did you get it because you're a Bioware games fan or just an avid RPG player?

I'd say I'm a Star Wars fan that enjoys a good RPG now and then. The last RPG that I played (and held my interest) was Gothic. I never played the sequel. Didn't like NWN, never played Dungeon Seige...

I think a good RPG every 1 1/2 to 2 years is plenty for me...they're quite draining!

Gothic2 is better than the original. I just like playing RPG's, though I've enjoyed the SW films over the years. KoTOR is the first SW game I've played. I only play PC RPG's and I won't pay to play online.

I am not a starwars computer game fan at all, Im a fantasy computer game fan almost exlusively.

I got it because there was not a good fantasy crpg out in a long time.

It is very much like NWN in that there is armor class, feats, etc. What I like that is different is that you control all the characters one at a time, and the other ones youre not controlling go to AI.

The story reminds me of some older star wars comic books I read. However its very movie like in its presentation. Just when it gets monotonous there is snappy dialogue. Characters are introduced dramatically. The plot twists. Its very well planned out.

I think it would be better than the star wars movies really, the script writer who wrote the story was most likely a star wars book or comic book writer although I am just assuming.
