Val, I'm peeved with the people who buy these vehicles for status and the feeling of power they give. Not the people who actually use them to haul stuff around in. But enough in this debate. I suggest we give this topic a rest.

I thought this topic was just getting interesting. heh

Status? I've never connected a "status" to a car except those fast little sports cars that old people buy in an attempt to hang on to their youth. Yeah dude, you're really hanging onto your youth when your toupee comes flying off your head when you zoom down the road. I actually saw that happen to someone. lol

Jumping in late here, but I gotta just say something about this...

But what about Europeans? You guys driving teenie tiny cars pretty much because the layout of your cities occured during times when there were no cars. I have a sneaking suspicion though that if things in Europe were a bit more spread out and you had more room in your cities, you would have bigger cars too.

Plus, I've been on your autoban. You folks are nuts! I will never ever again drive on the autoban. Sheesh... it's no wonder that most accidents on the autoban are severe...

------------

Sidenote: please take what I wrote with a sense of humor... I'm not trying to really be mean, just poking a little fun.... my roots are 100% European so I'm roasting myself anyway...

@Neptiofpovar - Hmmm, the price of gas could also have something to do with it. In the US the price is held abnormally low, in Europe the price of gas is roughly four times what it is in the US.

Question - WHERE did you get that name???

@Everyone - How much does gas cost where you live? Here it is about $1.80/L or about $7/gal.

The reason our gas is cheaper is because our government doesn't tax it to death like they do in Europe. They'd certainly love to though.

Last time I paid for gas it was... hmm... $1.49/gallon, I think.

Hmmm, I am not sure I have the time to get into this now, but I'll give it the good ole college try at a short exposition:

Val - The US price of gas is quite subsidized. There are many tax breaks given to the oil industry to encourage the low price since it is seen as such a critical resource. If you would like I will try and dig up some more information about it, but I recall that the last time I looked into it (about 1985 or so) the final product is able to be sold at roughly half the cost once all the hidden subsidies were taken out, and still leave a nice healthy profit for the producing/distributing/refining companies.

This does not consider the evironmental impact, and the long range clean up costs ... I have never seen a good treatment of those costs. The greens way overestimate them, and oil-friendly studies way underestimate them (I once saw an argued price addition of 0%).

There. Now I've gone and done it. This topic will change and I'll never get to know what gas costs overseas!

I'm not sure I'm understanding you correctly, when you say "cost", do you mean the cost to produce or the current cost of the gasoline?
Go ahead and dig up the info about it, I'd like to read it. I'm too busy doing research for my own paper to dig up stuff about this. Speaking of which, I better get back to it.

Gas prices here in Chicagoland range from about $1.55/gallon up to $1.95/gallon. Mind you, taht's for the cheapest grade (87 octane) and goes from the far west suburbs to downtown.
