This could be an exiting one: NCSoft announced their upcoming MMORPG Guild Wars today. For those who might have forgotten: Arena.Net was founded a few years ago by 3 ex-Blizzard people (including Patrick Wyat, the man who created Battle.net), first as Triforge then as ArenaNet.

I'm sure they'll turn this into something great...

I know I am making myself quite unpopular with many people, but who needs more MMORPGs really???

Well, I think noone needs more. I personally would need one I really like. That would be a good start. Guild Wars looks like a good one, especially because it allows soloing as well as group efforts. And if they find a way to keep those away whop don't roleplay, that would be an extra.

Well, I'm usually all for MMORPGs, and I'm one of the genre's defenders But what exactly do you find different in what they have just announced? I find it difficult to see anything worth getting excited about here unless that they seem to be thinking of a skill-based system, and the mention of a non-subscribtion based game, which means that it'll be free to play. And yet I wonder how they will even survive if they don't charge for playing on their servers and keep updating the game...

There was nothing here that peaked my interest, really

Oh no, I didn't mean to say that this one is entirely different, I just meant that we do need more different mmorpg's... so the more we get, the more chance there'll be a special/good one among them.
The reason why I expect this one to be one of the better ones is simply because of the team. But we'll see about that. Way too early to start hyping anyway

IMO, differences for MMORPGs are futile only.
Online games stay online games - at this time, there's no way I can see a solution for the following problem:

Many MMORPGs try to bring you a story now with story points where some things happen, which is a good thing...but they happen, no matter whether you are online or not! And if you go for a 2 weeks vacation, you may miss something crucible.
In single-player games, you decide, when the game continues.

As for the coop play: fine, but I don't really need an MMORPG for that, but can play Dungeon siege, NWN, Diablo, Vampire etc...

Sorry, but MMORPG is a NONO for me!

I'm not really interested in this one. It appears to have what most of the other games already will have (SWG, DE, Horizons, Darkfall), and does not advance the genre any. Not impressed. I dont care if it was made by the guys in blizzard. So what. And the graphics are sub-par. I will be skipping this one, since in 2004 cometh Warhammer Online and possibly Middle Earth Online...

But then again, you should create your own story, Garett. The thing is that the players should matter and not the storylines. It's the player who should be able to accomplish something and who should be able to be unique, in his own way. So basically players want to matter and want to change the world, not watch the world unfold in a predetermined manner.

I think you find the sollution for a large part in role-playing. No mmorpg appealed to me more than UO. Why? Because it had so many role-playing options and possibilities. There didn't have to be a "storyline" unfolding, some events from now and then that evolved around the actions of the players (not the other way round) are sufficient, as long as there's atmosphere, variety and role-playing.

But of course, tastes do differ, and I'm glad they do.

I never liked MMORPGs.
The thing I miss most in those games is are great, epic storyline with me as the lone hero wo saves the world.
You are nothing special in an MMORPG and there are no dense, epic storylines.
And you have to deal with many idiots who are just there to level up their characters and who don't play at all.
It is the same with reading a book or watching a movie, there has to be a main protagonist and an epic, dense storyline for an exciting adventure.
Maybe some players make their own storylines in an MMORPG, but those stories don't matter. Even if they have a slight impact on the world, I wouldn't care because I am not the one who did it.
In pen&paper RPGs you have your small band of heroes and an storyline, too. This is the way an RPG works for me.
