Monitor Life

Is it best to turn the monitor off(power button) or use Windows power managment to turn it off? As of now I turn it off and on about 2 or 3 times a day. My friend said that my monitor would last longer if I was to use power managment instead. Is there any truth to what he says? Also, I have another monitor, 17 inch, that I use and no matter how high I put the refresh rate, I still see alot of flicker. The monitor I am using now, 15 inch, doesn't do this. Is this a sign that my 17inch is starting to go? Thanks for any info.

Your 17 inch monitor is "starting to go" only if its image was really clear before. Otherwise it is just not a good monitor.
I doubt it is important if you use direct off button are send your monitor to "sleep" mode.

I'm not aware of any decent evidence one way or the other so I'd just go with your personal preference.

I always notice the flicker except when plying games. I have my destop set at 800x600, 75 Hertz. Regardless of how high I put the refresh rate, it still does it. Besides this, the colour is fine. No problem with the brightness or contrast. Perhaps you are right that it's a crap monitor. It's made by cicero, I company I've never heard of. Can't find any info on them. Perhaps they went out of business.

What's your video card?

BTW, for a 17 inch I would use a 1024*768 @ >75Hz. Can you select that one?

The 17 inch supports 1280x768. I was using the 17 on the same computer as the 15 with a geforce 2 ultra. I never go over 800x600, don't like the smallness. You would think that the 17, with its much higher hertz and resolutions, would work better then the 15 at 800x600 at 85hertz. Unfortunatly, it doesn't and I am stuck with a smaller screen. If all I did was play games, then I would switch back, but this is not the case.

GeForce cards up to GeForce 3 are well known to have a very low 2D picture quality. Maybe this fuzzyness is what you perceive as flickering?
