Did you get the book, what Xardas gave you, from monastery again and read all the stuff which came from it? Book itself, and the note? Note has quite obvious tip as to where the secret library is at, or at least, how to get there And you need to search it in the same room where you got the book from, nowhere else.

*Spoiler Ahead*

Spoiler:
In the room with the book, go to the way opposite end of the room. You'll see a bookcase in a little alcove. To the right of it is a torch. Pull the torch and the bookcase will open. The secret library is down there. Beware of demons.

If you mean the big metal grate in Xardas's tower, then yes, on the fireplace is a little button, which will open it.
