Atari Responds to the Cancellation of NWN Support @ Firing S |

<a href="http://www.firingsquad.com">Firing Squad</a> has a press release from Atari regarding the recent cancellation of Bioware's premium modules.

The problem with "closing the curtain" on NWN 1 is that NWN2 is not even an available product yet. Simply, nobody knows if it will suck or not and if NWN is in fact a superior product. _________________ "No one can disgrace us but ourselves."

It is a real shame to shoot NWN modules in the foot this way. They seem to be having a decent run. Even if there were no more planned, they could just let them fade away as NWN2 appeared rather than pre-emptively kill them just as a new one arrives and right after all the furor over the DM Client for NWN2 ... _________________ Dopelar effect (n.) It's four years old, actually . However, I don't think that anyone is really upset about the cancellation of support per se but more so about the cancellation of some premium modules (including that Dragonlance DLA one) that were very close to being finished.
The teams behind those premium modules have worked very hard on their mods for the past three years or so and now all of a sudden they're told that Atari would prefer if no more premium content for NWN would be released and that BioWare would no longer be allowed to support the release of premium modules. I can definitely understand if those people are not exactly happy, especially if it's true that they were just weeks away from finishing their (premium) mods. |

Why don't Atari put the premium modules in the NWN2 box, then all the people who want to play them will have to buy the new game to get to play with the old one.
And then, everyone would be happy. Atari for getting ca$h, and the comuniety for getting to play the mods... _________________ Its origin and purpose still a total mystery. |

haha, but they don't want them playing NWN anymore. It will take away from potential NWN2 sales and support for old products is always more expensive than new.
Besides, it smacks of bitterness Atari has w/ Bioware now. Bioware is occaisionally outpsoken (though subtle) about problems they have had w/ Atari and they turned down development of BG3 and NWN2.
The one piece that seems interesting here is WotC had already approved the content for the Premium Mods. This tells me that WotC has some say as well.
If in some fantasy world WotC could get involved and tell Atari they won't approve anything unless they let these Premium Mods go thru and available for the next patch that would be like rolling a 00. |

So, are they lying? Their press release says that they will continue to support current and future NWN mods. Are the cancelled mods back on track?
That's almost a rhetorical question. I suspect the answer is "no, they just lied in a press release, to hopefully shut up the griping."
