You can use first person (like in Quake) or third person (like in Tomb Raider). But really, just look at the screenshots next time, you could have easily checked for yourself...

A good friend of mine encountered the very same problem with crashing as he left the ship at the start of the game.

I searched the forums for him and found lots of people suffered crashes, but until now I didn't find a single one that duplicated his problem so exactly. Consequently I would be very interested to know if anyone out there can help akhtar. I was disappointed to only be able to offer my friend generic "update your drivers and patch up the game" type advice instead of a specific solution.

Happily I was completely unaffected by the problem myself and have always enjoyed Morrowind at its crash free best.

Crashing to Desktop

I've had the game crash twice when I used a exit portal, once in the balmora legion fort (the name escapes me at the moment) and the south wall, it is possible that the same glitch. However i've only encountered it while loading an interior cell, it still dosen't mean that it theoreticaly couldn't be triggered by loading an exterior cell.
Try starting the game again and see if it reoccurs. The only solution I've found is to quicksave every ten to fifteen minutes, since the game dosen't allow you to save before you exit the Character creation It's not an option for you yet.

Hope this helps.

Well...

When I first got the game it constantly crashed when loading new areas. I usually didn't manage to get out of the ship, if I did I certainly didn't get into the office.

Updating my graphics drivers worked for me.

And yes, there is a "third person" mode in Morrowind, except it's not really. It was originally just a vanity mode to enable you to view your character, but at some point in development they decided to make it properly usuable. However, it's *very* hard to aim projectile weapons while in that mode!

Please note that the camera follows behind your character, like in Tomb Raider - it's not a Baldur's Gate or a Neverwinter Nights-type "third person mode". If that's what you're after, I'm afraid you won't find it here.
