Oh no, another "Is Diablo a RPG" thread. I wonder if it is really so important. It isn't important - at least not for me. It was good game and enjoyed it as well as I enjoyed Wizardry 8.
A little bird circles Dani's head waiting to catch his attention. Danicek steps back in surprise then holds out his arm for it to land. The little bird (with a bright yellow belly) then drops a small scroll of paper into his outstreched hand. After recovering from his surprise Dani unrolls the paper and reads:
"Yeah, it might shape up that way, but I've not been involved in a 'Is Diablo an RPG' thread in a while *grin*

titus, a very simple test: Do you have ANY dialouge options in D1 or D2? Nope - so not a CRPG
Then I presume that Arx and several other games are out of the genre too?
Besides, you can choose wether to accept a quest or not in Diablo 2, which is basically what most dialogue options boil down to.
It may be an linear RPG, but an RPG it be, says I. |

hehehe hexy is right, I was thinking for an example without dialogue choices but Arx didn't came to mind and although there are so many others they slip my mind right now has Final fantasy real dialogue options? except for buying and selling? _________________ Want to become a vampire? a warrior in the battle between vampires and werewolves?

@Dani - Lets just say that Kiskadees (little birds with bright yellow bellies) and I have a special relation. Some people might be tempted to call them spies, personally I prefer to think of them as my little feathered friends ... who, by the way, keep me informed of things I should know .... like any good friend *Grin* _________________ =Member of The Nonflamers' Guild=

Lintra: I normally see you excell in math and logic from my knowledge to you, but from your distant talk about flying birds around your head, you certainly have changed from facts to fiction.
In the fiction world the number of birds around a head is equal to the size of the hit to the head, so I hope you do not have too many spies.
Well symbolic messages or not, if the discussion is that Diablo2 is a CRPG or not, I have to vote that it's a CRPG-light, Action-CRPG with focus on action, but still with roots in the CRPG-world. Choice of dialogs is a CRPG feature, but in my book not the only one, and not a demand for a game to become a CRPG.
Well just my 10 cent's about this CRPG or not topic.
With Diablo 3 possible under it's way, we will probably have opportunity to discuss that again in the future. _________________ Moderator on RPGdot.com Forum.

@Michael C - It has been quite a while since the riddle thread hasn't it?
I agree like the description "Action w/ CRPG elements". For me when I feel like playing a CRPG Diablo never comes to mind. When I feel like piling up the body count it comes to mind. But I can understand why some folk see it as a CRPG ... I guess I am just too hooked on stuff like Planescape: Torment, or Fall out, or the Ultima's or ToEE or Wizardy.
But when it comes right down to it none of these are as open as a pen and paper RPG - which is (to me) the ideal.
ACCH! I just realized I am not observing this, I am participating!! I just spent the last 15 minutes asking myself why Diablo does not qualify in my books as a CRPG and trying to work out the reasons. _________________ =Member of The Nonflamers' Guild=

Yeah, I've noticed that *grin*
But it makes some real sense. The moments of complete rapture that can strike every now and then in a good CRPG are so moving, that it is only natural to ask "How can I get that feeling again?". _________________ =Member of The Nonflamers' Guild=

I agree 100%. I think an action/rpg section would be groovy! Dungeon Lords is coming out soon and we could talk about it there! _________________ Between the years when the oceans drank Atlantis and the gleaming cities…there was an Age undreamed of, when shining kingdoms lay spread across the world like blue mantles beneath the stars…Hither came Conan, the Cimmerian, black-haired, sullen-eyed, sword in hand…to tread the jeweled thrones of the Earth under his sandaled feet. - Robert E.
