I smell fish

I was reading the benchmarks for the Ultimate Gaming Machine on PcGamer's January issue and found something akward. The Alienware Aurora, IBuyPower Zillion-FX, and the ABS Ultimate M6 all had the same hardware. All of them were equipped with AMD's 64 FX-51 chip, the neForce 3 Pro150 mobo, and the Nvidia GeForce FX 5950 Ultra with 256mb. There were slight difference of wattage in power supply (only by 20ish) and the ram were from different companies (all had 1 gig). Also, the Aurora and the Ultimate M6 had dual 120gb Seagate Barracuda 7200rpm Sata drivers. The Zillion-FX had dual 120gb 7200rpm drives(brand not mentioned). HOWEVER, on the 3DMark2003 at 1280X960 benchmarks, the Aurora scored a 3102, while the Zillion-FX and the Ultimate M6 scored 3022 and 2431 respectively. What could account for this major difference? I mean the chip, mobo, graphics card, and amount of ram is exactly the same. My guess is, the benchmarks are bought. Alienware probably paid a hefty donation (it was ranked 2nd Ultimate Gaming Machine by the way; Voodoo PC F1 got first, but it was overclocked and it costs 5 large) to get PcGamer to put them as 2nd. Any thoughts?

How they tweak the OS can have an effect on how hardware performs. What drivers they have installed for the hardware can also play a part.
You can have screaming fast hardware, but if the software for it is lousy, the system won't perform as well.

Hmm, I see. Then that's probably another reason why it's a bad idea to build a computer from scratch. I wouldn't know which 0S config or BIOS to choose. My mind has been made. I'm purchasing an Alienware Aurora today.
