Lets speculate about why certain people were put in prison in the first place, some are pretty blatant (eg Horatio and Herek) but others are more obscure. Here's what I think,
The Main Character: Asking questions of people with bo concern of their social position.
Diego: Took the blame for someone else's criminal acts.
Mud: Practising homo-sexuality in a public place.
Gorn: Desertion in times of war.
Lester: Definitely wrongly accused!
Fortuno: Possesion of Narcotics.
All the Brotherhood (except Lester): Worshipping idols!
Bullitt: Beating people up without good cause.
Gomez: They put him in for fun-just to laugh at him!
Please reply on what you think they were in the barrier for.

I started a pretty similar thread once, so here's the link for inspirational reading:

Mud's in there because of his love for animals, btw. He tells you somewhere along the way...

Jaz, were you serious when you said you'd find a picture of pre-Brotherhood Lester in the comic book, if so could you send it to me.

Interesting reading.
Gerd? Please tell me you were not serious. That sounds like someone from Grimes Fairy Tales.

Lester's Friend: I have the scans ready. not great quality, but still . Now all I need is your email addy.

Val: Why, Gerd is quite a typical name for guys one generation before mine. Since he looks so generic, I thought it was a fitting name. Although 'Me' is younger than me... hmmm... his name would probably be Pascal or some such.

On another board (non-Gothic) I was asked why the Gothic NPCs didn't have names like 'Fritz' or 'Heinrich', since it's a German game. I got a good laugh out of that, then I asked him why the Diablo NPCs weren't called Scott, Jason or Billy Bob...

Sorry Jaz, but I just can't see any hero character saying, "I am Gerd, Slayer of Dragons and Hero of the Realm!" It just sounds... wrong, very wrong.

Ah, but when he starts out, he's NOT a hero . He simply looks like a Gerd Schneider to me ...
A true hero's name would be Grondoval (he was the main character from Witchaven). Now imagine the Gothic guy say: "Hi, my name is Grondoval Schneider."

Okay, Grondoval is a step up. I just don't think a hero's name should rhyme with a word like curd. I can hear the neighborhood kids now, Gerd the curd.

Bah! Gerd is a great name! I'd name my hero Gerd if I could, just 'cause it sounds so ridiculous!

Oh yeah, and I think some of the people are too nice to be in prison, and they probably just tripped and fell in. Snaf, for instance. I think Baloro's in because he's an asshole, and nobody in the outside world likes him. I don't know why Diego might be in...perhaps he was friends with Lester, Gorn, or Milten before they got thrown in, and fell into disfavor by association? That might make sense.

True, but not by much.

Jaz, Val, I have never heard the name Gerd before in my life! Am I a complete shut-in, or are we chasing another swamp witch?
