What do you think about this party?
   

I haven't even gotten the game yet, not sure if I will...but I could use that old-school feeling the demo seemed to give, so....

I've thought that I might want something like this..

Human Ninja
Human Valkyrie
Draconian Samurai
Dwarf Priest
Some sort of offensive magic class......mage, psionicist...i dunno
either ranger, or gadgeteer. MAYBE a bard.

What do you think? Any suggestions?

I named 6 people, just wasn't sure as to what some of them should be. I simply have an idea of what type of character some of them are.



Hmm...well now I have a dillema. I kinda want to have a Mook Ranger so I have someone that can use the Giant Sword. So now I don't know what to do.

Maybe that will work well. Only 2 hardcore magic characters, but some of the others can use magic too.

Party choices
   

It is a matter of personal opinion. Most any party is playable. Some people like to go with fewer characters, because experience points for kills are divided between all surviving characters. I personally like to keep a full party of six regular characters plus two NPC's. You will be able to pick up NPC's in Arnika, the first town you go to after leaving the monastary.

The party you listed in your 9:27 am post should work o.k. I would use a Bishop instead of a priest. A Bishop can learn all four spell books, but you might want to concentrate on two to start with. I would put a little on Devine Magic, but mostly on Mental.

Not bad, definitely playable. Assuming this is your party: I'd suggest focusing the ninja on fighting / thieving, and use the ranger as a bowman / alchemist. The ninja will be the hardest class for you to develop, which is why I suggest this to simplify your life. (I don't generally recommend bishops and ninjas to new players.) The party lacks the psionic spell book, but no spell is essential. (And while I love the monk, I can't really suggest swapping one of your classes in favor of the monk. And no, don't swap your mage or priest for a psionic or a bishop, IMHO.)

Mook: Slooooow. The low dexterity score will not help either. On the other hand, seeing a fighter berzerk with a Giant Sword would be amazing.

Drac/Liz: Probably a personal preference thing. The Drac's Acid Breath really isn't very useful from my experience.

When faced with the same decision, I went with a Liz.

I never ran a pure fighter PC, other than in the demo. I wasn't impressed by the lizardman fighter there. I have run a dracon samurai, a dracon ranger and a mook monk, and was happy with all 3. Although I like the stats for the dracon race for fighter types, the breath weapon is not really useful, so don't use that as the deciding factor. Also, I don't have a good basis of comparison for the mook speedwise, but I don't think they're that slow - as a monk, my mook generally got in the first strike out of my whole party and was taking six martial arts attacks per round (3x and 3x, more with haste cast).

yah, your Mook Monk is fast because Monks are fast, it's a required attribute. I'm starting a group now with a Mook Bard, who'll get 1 level as Rogue for stealth and then change to Fighter at L12(total). This'll get me nice buffing capacity, and enough Fighter levels by the time i need them, and Giants' Sword on Berzerk.
A Mook who starts as a Fighter has only 35 Speed, unless you pump it as high as you can from the 40 extra points you get. If you start as a speedy Class, you have fewer points to distro, but a faster Mook.

Humbug! Assuming you pump up strength, dexterity, and speed with your opening points (not a definite choice, but likely for a fighter), you'd end up with:

Mook: 64/50/25/50/48/48/55
Drac: 75/35/30/60/70/60/30
Liz : 77/25/25/70/57/66/30

Even on his best day, the Mook will be weaker, slower, and less likely to hit. Between the Drac and Liz, it depends on what is important to you. The Liz can access powerstrike (100 str) by level 9. The Drac has to wait until level 10. Not a big difference, but it was the final tiebreaker when I made my choice.

Two things to consider:
1. A fast character casting (or playing) Haste can add as much as 70, so nobody else needs more than 55 to get their whacks in right away.
2. Giants' Swords.
My Mook Ranger will max Dex at L11, Sen at 15, Str at 21 and Vit at 35.
My Mook Gad-to-Fighter will max Dex and Str both at L15, Sen at 28 and Vit at 29.
Since i'm only taking 3, they'll get to these levels much earlier, and the Bard, a Felpurr, will have max Speed at L10 and Senses at L11, for top Initiative. Because nobody else needs speed over 55, their development is simplified. (If you've seen these stat-testing threads, mostly Dorkus', you'll see why i skip Int, too.)

Well I looked at my party again and decided I had too many overlapping skills.

Hobbit Ninja
Gnome Gadgeteer
Elf Mage
Dwarf Priest
Mook Fighter
Human Valk

So I changed to this instead.
But seeing as how Mook Fighters are worse than lizardmen OR draconians, I'm wonderng what to do now.

If I absolutely HAD to have a Mook in my party, what class should he be?

I think mooks make good rangers. My most recent party had a mook ranger. I put the 40 starting points into dex, speed, and senses. I thought the other stats were good enough at their default values. The manual says they do well as psionics, but the low piety value scared me off.

I like your new party. If you must have a mook with the 6 classes you've chosen, I'd stick with the mook fighter. I stand by my statement that the mook isn't a great choice for fighters, but the joy of Wiz8 is that anything can be successful if you're willing to work at it.

Yah, Mook Ranger with 3X-xbow and Giants' Sword removes a lot of stuff from the map really fast.
If you have that speedy caster make Haste right away, the Mook with only 55 Spd still gets the first shot all the time. Usually 2 pairs of shots with Tripleshooter. Esp once Senses starts having a noticable effect on Initiative.
