G3 using Pixel Shader 3.0

I read somewhere that G3 will support Pixel Shader 3.0 pathways. I also read that the lower end of spec requirements will be the level of a GF3.

I know this is rather a question of judgement rather than fact but do those 'in the know' believe it be worth getting a PS 3.0 compliant card so as to maximise the appreciation of the improved graphics at a decent framerate?

Well, i think that G3 will be using content instead of pixel shaders

G3 uses DirectX9 technology. If your card doesn´t support it in hardware you´ll have to lower the details. Same for Oblivion and The Witcher. Decent DX9 cards aren´t that expensive any more.

Disclaimer: take everything below with a grain of salt but from what I
understand...

It all depends on the type and number of 3.0 shader programs used in the
game. PS 3.0 may be used to increase performance while providing the same
effect that PS 2.0 does (hence it will run faster on your PS 3.0 card) OR be
employed to implement a more complicated effect previously not applicable
because it introduced a major performance hit. So then you would have Lower detail-fx quality ,as Gorath said, because simply they wont have a fallback
shader for that effect, but that may mean that you could actually have even
slightly less fps than before in return for Q !

At any rate I doubt PBs engine programmers know themselves these
types of specifics yet...

The general trend is that PS3.0 Means faster.. Back when Crytek intoduced
the PS3.0 patch for FarCry Nvidia claimed a 30% increase in performance

Better look into your own pocket and ask yourself what kind of performance
boost would justify upgrading to a decent PS3.0 card (nothing less than a
6600GT)... More than 10-15% ? (no chance but then again I am no
authority on the matter)

Take also into account that the game may end up being severely CPU Limited
like its predecessors (no reason to throw away money to get those extra 5 fps
when the game wont budge from 20 fps even in 800x600)...

The kind of effects that you can do with pixel shaders are very difficult and innefficient, or even impossible using software alone. Considering the engine that G3 is using I would think its definately a very good idea to get a PS2.0 compatible card at the very minimum.

Its just like when Morrowind came out. Sure you could play it without PS2.0 shaders, and it still looked nice, but you didnt get that amazing water effect.

Just for the record Morrowind uses PS1.1 for the water (even FarCry uses 1.1
for the water). I'm just saying that to further the point, that for most of the
basic "cool" effects that catch the eye, a previous generation Card (PS2.0)
should be enough. PS2.0 and 3.0 are mostly used for lighting (i.e 2.0 in HL2)
and normal Mapping(3.0 in FarCry) etc...

Also when buying "that new card with that cool new feature" mind the fact that
some of the "early" adopters can really suck in terms of performance when
these new features are enabled (espesially the mid to entry level models)...

Sure my 6600GT has support for Geometry Instancing (std DX9.0c feature
used by speedtree should give engines using it a nice performance bump)
but when you turn it on in FarCry instead of performance going up it goes 20%
down!

Honestly i think PS 2.0 will be enough for G3. Everybody who's buying a 6600 GT because of the oh so cool HDR lighting should know that enabling this feature will slow down your frame rates considerably and perhaps to a point the game isn't playable anymore.

I think a good PS2.0 card with 256 MB Ram will be better than a normal PS3.0 card with 128 MB - just IMHO of course.
