I was thinking about installing mm4-5. Has anyone here played them? How are they compared to mm6 in length and difficulty? Are there random encounters or do monsters respawn etc etc.

I bet there are a lot of people here that have played those games.
They are kind of antique by today's standards, but were really good games for their time.

There are't any random encounters that I can remember, and I think that the monsters do respon at some point.

Might and Magic 4-5 AKA Clouds of Xeen and Darkside of Xeen AKA Worlds of Xeen are IMO the best of the Might and Magic series. They are the first games of the series that I ever recall playing, and to this day are very entertaining. In fact, I just recently rebuilt a dedicated DOS gaming machine, complete with all of the good old MIDI modules, MT-32/ SC-55, JUST to play Worlds of Xeen along with some other good old DOS RPGs.

Anyways, my point is, YES, those are fantastic games, and IMO are the best of the entire series.

Now that's dedication! Surprised you can find all the controllers/drivers and such to build with.

In Might + Magic 4+5 the monsters respawn until you destroy their hideout. i can highly recommend these games for rpg-fans. Might and Magic-newbies or casual gamers should choose the adventure mode with lesser fights.

I bought a cd from 3DO that had every Might and Magic game up until 6. 1, 2 and 3 were a little too archaic for my tastes, but Worlds of Xeen actually held up fairly well, and they ran fine in the windows environment, at least for me. Lot's of quests, special events, rapid character promotion, I just had a great time with Worlds of Xeen, plus it came with a fan based Swords of Xeen that was pretty tough, but fun.

But like any older game, the graphics really are pretty dated, but if you give the Xeen game an hour or so of your time, you wont notice the bad graphics. I recommend Xeen to any diehard RPG gamer.

I thought 6, 7 and 8 were great games, but again to enjoy them, you have to have a tolerance for less than pretty graphics, but the games, especially 7, are a lot of fun to play, but again you have be able to get past the poor graphics...

Yes, I know and I am not able to get past this.
Everyone said beware of poor graphics and I though well, probably it will be a little bit uglier. But when I installed it and saw first "sprite" creature... I realized that I will not able to play it .

You should try to put up with the graphics. I found 6 (and 7) to be totally engrossing...6 is very, very big. You have to be into slaughtering literally thousands of beasties, but completing some of the dungeons in 6 is extremely satisfying.

The story for 7 (and to some extent the game system) is better, but MM6 really got to me.

Just think of the graphics as being “retro”.
