Well from a more neutral point of view from someone whom loves and hates Gothic .
I see the main jest of his oppinion as the same complaints as most reviewers of Gothic series Contols and Inventory.
I completly agree with him about the mouse cursor and not only are his conserins the same as 80% of the reviews of Gothic, but PB recognises this as well.

As Gorath pointed out PB in all their brilliance of making one of the best RGs ever made did not realise it was a bad idea to only use a keyboard.
Then heading the words of the fans keep the orginal scheme of controls but developed a more standard set of controls for Gothic 2 and inproved the inventory system as well.

The major problem that happened is that 90% of gamers do NOT read manuals and we all (most of us) remember the manuals for Gothic, and PB/JoWood (not sure which) to have the OLD style controls as DEFAULT.
That single decsion proabaly chased away 30% of the possible customer/fan base and 80% of the reviewers that any successful game developer NEEDS to surive.

Diehard fans are always willing to critize casual gamers or new to a RPGs one of the most complicated games made to play and chase away potienal fans/customers the developers need desperatly.

No I dont agree with everything the reviewer said and I havent looked for other reviews at the site but I see many instances where he showed Gothic much respect and he is proabaly not a PRO RPGer but if the RPG genre does not grow, WE as fans can KISS the funding goodbye and the games we love to play.

I think this review points on bang on why this game wasn't a huge, huge hit. Its probably the most intelligent review of those who didn't like the game.

pathetic

why people who don't like RPGs write RPGs reviews...

slow paced game... go play Doom and don't write RPG reviews

as for me, Gothic 2 gold is RPG of the year (well, ok... hard to say if it's 2003 or 2005)

I hope the game sells well !!!
any info about it ?

My primary issue with the review is that he sets himself up as a diehard rpger and defines great rpgs as open-ended and interactive and then proceeds to effectively say that he doesn't like the game for these same reasons (in addition to the nonstandard interface). In this sense the review is contradictory and quite annoying.

I understand complaints with games interface and combat (although I was able to overcome), but disagree wholeheartedly with most of the other complaints given what the reviewer professes to be a good rpg. I think this contradiction why your seeing so many posts here.

There are a host of good reasons why this wasn't a big hit in the US with odd interface and lack of combat polish only a part. It was actually probably more a factor of the whacked distribution process and lack of marketing. Unless you followed the game and/or were a fan of the first, I don't think you would even know about it.

It´s confirmed that Aspyr sold more than 50k of SpellForce Platinum so far. I´m not sure what this means for G2 Gold, but at least it shows that Aspyr is strong enough to move significant numbers.

let me guess

i'm preetty sure the reviewer didn't even train his combat skills so that he could unlock the combos, of course the combat is a lot more difficult, with this game if you go first for the huting in the wild like all dumbed down rpg's were the tracks are beaten to death and monsters follow your progression, you'll finish in raw meat hé

Well, I think that is the point of frustration for many people trying Gothic, the skill/combat system is like nothing before really, nor is it explained very well.
Not to mention that the starting area has extremely dangerous areas, people do NOT expect to be overwhelmed by monsters, when they can not even do the combat sucessfully in the first hour or two.
99% of RPGs ease you into there system the first hour or so, simply not the case here.

Most RPG players I have ever heard like to go everywhere look at everything absorb the world, it can not be done here.
Oh sure there was that grave warning about "your to weak dont go off the path"
how many times have we as PC game charaters been given dire warnings and prediction, try every hour on the hour
Then the next sentence is "go OFF the path by the lake down in the valley and pick herbs", yeah sure DONT go off the path.

So theroitcally someone could be a very experienced RPG player and have no clue how to handle Gothic, especially if they mostly play Iso's, which many people consider hard core, since most RPGs roots come from many Iso's.

I did a little check, here are their ratings compared to other major sites.
Doom RPG- Gameranking
I never even heard of this, sounds like joke.
http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/927196.asp
They are equal with Gamespy, little above Gamespot, and GameDaily.

Final Fantasy XI -Gameranking
http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/555735.asp?q=Final%20Fantasy%20XI
They are equal to Avault and Game Zone, they little higher than Gamespy and GameSpot and IGN.

Guild Wars
http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/914653.asp
They are equal with EuroGamer, GameSpy, Gamespot and at least 3 others.

I of the Dragon
http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/544184.asp?q=I%20of%20the%20Dragon
The rankings for this are all over the board, they are equal to IGN, GameSharkand Computer Games RD about the last 5 are lower.

Sacred
http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/915057.asp?q=Sacred
While the average is a C on Gamerankings, they game it a D.

Genforge 2
Opps can not find a listing here.

Gothic 2 Gold
http://www.gamerankings.com/itemrankings/itemsearch.asp
Here there is only their review, so I am averaging THe Gothic 2 and NotR for about a B+ and they game C+ saying "doesn't quite reach its true potential."
If it had not been that damn Gamespy review Gothic 2 would have been mid to high 80s where it easily deserved to be.

Now I never heard of these guys, never read any of their othre reviews, never been to their site before and proabaly never will, nor have i played any of these listed games except of course all three Gothics (tried the Sacred Demo, could get it to work ).

Let us hope that whom ever the publisher is that they have enough sence to put the EASISET control scheme as DEFAULT, so everyone can learn what an increditablly great experience Gothic games can be :xtremecheer:

But when you take a look at the Night of the Raven you'll find a rating of 95%.

You see: It's all in the name.

a great example of a clueless reporter

either he's kidding or he never played a decent RPG in his life. and he's not kidding, so he has no clue to what's RPG and should NEVER EVER set his goal in life to write review about RPG-if you want to write review about these kind of games you must AT LEAST play those games, and finish them at least twice:

fallout 1,2
planscape torment
baldur's gate 1&2
gothic 1, 2
maybe icewind dale 1&2

these are the most decent RPG's in the last 10 years, if you haven't played those and you want to write reviews about these kind of games-GET LOST!

everything that guy compared was to somekind of idiotic diablo2 console retard hack and slash gibbrish shooter which has no meaning what soever but to bash a game he never understood or ever will. like throwing a masterpiece to the garbage without knowing.

good job reporter, you just made the day for ten's of thousends of fans for this game, and plus you really way off the other magazines which at least gave this game A- without realizing everything about it...

pffff, some people have nerve, too bad i cant comment on his magazine.
