Can anyone tell me where I can get a decent bow for my ranger? I've been only as far as Trynton, and I can't get into the trees yet, so I can't use anything up there..Right now the damage is really low, like 4-10 or something, I think, and I'd really like to get his power up, as he gets off 2 shots/round.. any advice welcome!

Keep building up his attributes regarding more shots and more actions.
Later you will get Xbows which includes 5-10% change of instant KILL, and you can even find special bolts, that will add 3-5% change of instant kill. So,later he will get quite good at killing monsters also from a distance.

Yes, he's had a few critical hits so far, and gotten a couple of instant kills. Right now, he's using the next bow up from a short bow. Should I start using crossbows? I had a light Xbow earlier, but sold it...which is generally better? They both use the same attributes, right? Bow skill and Dexterity?

Use XBows. Their bolts do great damage (the right ones)

Will do..however, is it like in Gothic, where the Xbow fires at a slower rate for more damage? Or, is it pretty much the same (or identical) firing rate as regular bow? I'm a big fan of the 2X fire per round!!

Also, should I just keep putting pts into dexterity and bow, or focus on some other stats instead??

Bows and Xbows use the same attributes.
Bolts do in general more damage than arrows.
Go for Xbow/bolt types that enhance your change for instant kill. The next best is the Xbows/bolts who paralyse/insanity your opponents. The sleep ability is rather useless imho, because if htey take a hit they wakeup again, that don't happen with paralyse/insanity.
Xbows are in general slower than bow, but there are some special Xbows in the game that actual have eliminated that flaw. 2 action with each 2 shots each combat round!!!

Well, I made the switch to xbow..as it's still pretty early in the game for me, i'm only level 8 now, I can't really tell much of a difference thus far. I'm using the bolts that have 10%insanity, I think, but I'm yet to cause any insanity in any enemies. I've only been in a couple of fights since going over to Xbow...

it was so late last night when I got it!! I swear, this game is really putting a hamper on my studying time...all that source code isn't gonna write itself!!!

You apparently haven't used your 'Wheel Key' yet. (nudge, nudge, hint, hint)

My 22 level ranger is very usefull character (I use bow). He usually kills 2 or 3 (from group of 8 or 7) with Instant Kills .

Okay, I got the wheel key code figured out.. I found Demonsbane bow (I think that's the name..)

Shall I use this bow, or my Xbow now?? So many conflicting views!!

This bow is good one. I used it for long time. Now I have another, far more better, you will be able to buy it later in game. But maybe there are crossbows which are even better.

Yes, I really enjoy the speed bonus...it is much faster than the Xbow I was using (light Xbow). The initiative difference is 3 pts, I believe..

I need to get more instant kills, though, they are really rare for me now..

So, more bow skills and dexterity, right??

Yes dexterity and bow skills, but read carefully description of main skills (I do not know if some other of them does effect this skill).
But I think most important is Critical strikes skill (special skill of my Elf-Ranger.

There is no harm in using a bow instead of a Xbow, they are boosting the same abilities.
I guess i used these special bows quite a long time before I came by the really good Xbows.
