Personnaly, I think BG1 was better than BG2.
Why?
First because it was the first one, the original, the one that made things change for RPG and give them a new life.
And seconds, more important, BG2 was not an open RPG ( contrary what many seem to say, like BG1 was: In BG1 you could go wherever you wanted, there was freedom. That's what I thought about BG2 for the first chapters, until the game became linear ( it all began in the boat attacked by submariners if I remember well ), and guiding you from place to place until the end.

It might be good to remember that this is the Baldurs Gate 3 forum thread.

@Risine, the main quest is pretty linear, that's true but the game as such is really open IMO.

Still, I would have to agree with Risine that BG2 was not as open as BG1

On the other hand, if what's been said so far is true, that BG3 will be 3D and not isometric, I can say with 120% certainty that I won't be buying the game, either.

I have always felt that BG felt more like an rpg than bg2. Maybe it was because bg had a better villain and better story and not so epic.
Still I believe this thread is about bg3. If it is in production the only people that might pull it of that hasnt been ruled out is bethesda software

Do you mean BG3 or the BG: Dark Alliance console stuff? None of the "real" BG series has ever come out on console so there's no reason to think BG3 would be developed for the PS2.

The story sucked though. Unless you are like 12 years old or something. The dialogue literally made me wince. Both the dialogue and story were silly and seemed targeted toward a pre-teen demographic. There was so much that was great about the game though. I just clicked through the dialogue without reading it and killed off minsc as soon as possible.

Baldur's Gate 2 makes it on my top ten list of greatest CRPGs specifically for it's great strategic fighting. It may be just sophisticated hack and slash, but it does it so well. Bioware just needed Chris Avellone or Dave Maldonado to write the story and dialogue for them.

The weird thing about bioware is that they seem to realize the importance of story to a great CRPG, but they can never manage to hire any good writers.

Well i disagree with and agree and the same time with most of your statements, while the sotry isnt the greatest ever, it's alot better than other rpgs that I've played (eg: NWN, seriously bland). The BG2/ToB storyline is great because although it has characters who know you b4 and each react to you in diffrent ways you are also able to customize your character nicely. Sure it does end up being linear, but I'd rather it be somewhat linear than lead you in no direction with BS quests that mean nothing (eg: Icewing Dale, i mena seriously gameplay was nice but there was no REAL story).

@Naked: Well it's true that roleplaying is important and that it's not all about stats and skills, but after you have beaten the game it doesnt hurt to plan out your character for replay value.

Seriously i tihnk the BG series (not DA) has one of the best "NON-Linear" PC Rpg storylines. If you can think of a game with a better storyline, tell me.

NWN and IWD had no REAL storylines, DA as well, they were like doing the sidequests in BG2. BG started with characters which you met up again later, and your characters interacted with each other alot more. Of course i only listed 2 games, but those are just examples of what i mean.

Sorry, but I disagree with you.How can you say BG2 is non-linear? BG2 is a great game, but IS linear!!! You do not have any other choice than following the storyline from place to place. And THAT is linear.
And for great rpg games, there are many ones BG does not overstate, like fallout serie, Ultima, Ultima underworld, Lands of Lore, nd sure I miss many more.

That just reinforces what I said, Dorn. You are talking about "Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance 3" -- the console action-RPG from Snowblind, which we have yet to hear anything official about. This thread is for "Baldur's Gate 3", the PC-only (so far) sequel to the original "Baldur's Gate" and "Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn" (plus expansions), developed by BioWare.

The only thing I know about Dark Alliance 3 is that Snowblind recently purchased the name rights from Interplay - nothing about the date.

well that just sucks , I can't believe it I got all excited and then it seems for nothing all I need now is for someone to tell me fallout 3(if it will ever be made) will be a console "ACTION-rpg"(which really means running around taking on hordes of enemies and big bosses with no plot at all.

Fallout 3 is being produced by bethesda soft and the comments we have heard so far from them if I remember rightly is it will not have npcs like morrowind...which is lucky. I don't think it sucks that we haven't heard much about BG3, at this point they are probably still working out the design and working on the core engine, if they are not using the TOEE engine (which wouldn't be a bad choice in my opinion as long as they spend some time working out the kinks)

As someone said, maybe BG2 becomes linear after the first few chapters, but for heavens sake, dont tell me the first chapters are linear, theres tons, tons and tons of long nice side quests.

Gojira: You obviously dont even like RPGs if you just click through the dialogs anyway.

Anyway, back to BG3, as an old-school Atari fan I hate to admitt it, everything they are involved stinks nowdays. BG3 is never going to be able to live up to the previous games.
