I have to disagree with 1 thing Otter said: I never found any monsters that you couldn't run away from (with the probable exception of the very endgame).

1 other suggestion to speed up combat: Use potions. Most of the time, I forget I'm carrying any. But throwing a cherry bomb or 2 (even if not needed) will speed things up compared to your back characters using slings, etc.

There are some that are too fast to run from once you're in Combat Mode.
You can run from everything if you're not; you just need somewhere to go...

Ah, the Wiz 8 combat system!, the one thing that has made me nearly destroy my PC in frustration.
To be honest, I think it is so bad it could almost be called a bug.

A- I don't want to have to run away from every encounter, even in towns.

B- I actually want to be able to traverse a road in less than 1 whole day (real time)

C- I don't want to spend 20 minutes fighting 5 weeds!.

The answers you guys give are a great help, but they are like bug work arounds ie how to avoid the bug of slow and too frequent combat.

I don't know if any of you have played POR 2?. This had a similar combat issue, ie very very slow enemy movement, I played this just before I bought Wiz 8 and just could not believe Wiz 8 had the same combat issues, but worse!.
I also didn't like the unsolveable puzzles (without cheating) and the tunnel like overland areas (ie unscalable cliffs).
Suffice to say I sold them both on Ebay and went back to playing the Might and magic series (not in order) 4 & 5 then 9 and now 7 & 8.
These games are much more like it!.

Yah, W-8's real fighty...i just went back to W-7(Gold) and if you turn off the sound combat rounds are almost instantaneous. W-8 would be perfect if it had an instant-results switch in phased combat.

When I first started Wiz8 I had to switch from Normal to Novice on the road to Arnika (and it was for me the most difficult part of the game - I had battles with more than 20 monsters at once). I had one fight after another, later I used some of the techniques desribed above.

Recently I decided to go through the game all in Normal. I have a strange feeling that it goes much too easy! I think there is much less combats, and maybe creatures are stronger, but now I know how to handle them and have quite nice team (however previos one was also fine).

Have anyone had such experience when playing second time on higher difficulty?

If you can send me this speed patch, however, I would be grateful.

Send me an email, and I'll reply back with the speed-up utility attached.
