TES 4 Oblivion: Update from Pete Hines on official forums

Over at the official Elder Scrolls Forums, a new message from Pete Hines, PR guy at Bethesda, has been posted, giving you an update on the situation with their upcoming game. Since it isn't too long, here it is as a whole:

So Todd and I were talking last night and decided that we, or I, should post something on the forums to try and bring fans up-to-speed on what's up. So here goes.

In short, the game is coming out in early 2006 because it isn't done yet. We still have things that need to be done before the game is released. So we continue to optimize, test, balance, etc. We've already gone way beyond what we did in any game previously in playtesting and balancing this game. Way beyond. But there is work that needs to be done and so development continues to go on pretty much around the clock. We will not put out a more specific date until we are certain we will be ready then. Like system specs, we aren't fans of putting out info that changes later on and only confuses or annoys our fans.

We have a number of site updates planned between now and the game's release that we hope to do on a regular basis each week. We'll do the best we can to make it every week, but understand that sometimes PR/marketing stuff gets in the way of game development and so it has to get set aside sometimes for the good of the game (and the people making it). We'll be updating the Codex in stages, adding new concept art, screens, etc. in the coming weeks and months. We're open to doing another fan interview in the coming weeks as well to let you ask what it is you think we aren't telling you. In short, we aren't holding out on you, we just don't want to be done telling you about the game before it comes out.

We appreciate your patience and continued support and ensure you that your dedication will be rewarded with what we think is the best RPG you've ever played.

Best,

Pete (and Todd)

Elder Scrolls game

This game is still high on my anticipated releases list for rpgs. The timing is good because I plan on buying a new computer early next year.

An informed customer is a happy customer, and happy customers buy games from people that make them happy.I think any person thinking of buying Oblivion has a right to know what is going on and Beth. has an obligation to keep it's customers informed.
I'm just plain tired of dev.and publisher and marketing arrogance and the people who defend that behavior as if it were the god-given right of the "creative genius" behind the game.Bull-shit!

I for one appreciate their candor and sincerity. They seem to genuinely care about their customers, something that is sadly absent from most game developers these days. Kudos to Bethulsa and the Oblivion team!

I agree that if Bethesda is delaying the release of the game to make it more complete and less buggy that they do in fact care about the customer.

Releasing an unfinished, unpolished, and buggy game for a quick but shallow turn around on their investment would be an easier road to travel given the time-pressure on them from their publishers.

And the people getting all irate about the delay for whatever reasons are also the same people with the loudest voices that whine and moan when a game is released 'on time' but full of bugs.

Sadly, as a gaming community, we are nothing but a lot of whiners. Devs can't win no matter what they do. If Devs could walk on water we would, as a gaming community, still find something to complain about.

I plan on buying Oblivion the day it ships. As far as I'm concerned, Bethesda owes me nothing but a game that works reasonably well (allowing for the possibility of crashing/freezing/glitching with any gaming software). They don't have any obligation to keep me informed or cater to me or treat me special. It certainly benefits them (and me) to inform/cater to/love me because it increases my opinion of them as a company and thus creates a greater likelihood that I will buy their products. But not catering to me doesn't negatively affect my feelings for the company. In turn, I don't owe them anything. If I don't want their game, I don't have to buy it.

.I think any person thinking of buying Oblivion has a right to know what is going on and Beth. has an obligation to keep it's customers informed.

There was a time (1980's) when there was no Internet and no gaming magazines. Nobody demanded to know the release date of Might and Magic 2 or Ultima 4. They just appeared on store shelves and fans were pleased.

If you think concept art posted on Blizzards webpage for a currently untitled project to be released in 2008 is big news, you probably have no idea what I am talking about.

It is all just information overload and hype these days.

Pet Hines is a professional Public Relations person so he knows that in todays world, he has to post some information about current development.

He or any other game developer in no way has an obligation to do so and gamers do not have any legal or even important right to know.

It is just nice of them to do so, not essential.

Pete Hines is in charge of PUBLIC relations. It is his job to communicate to the public. Which includes, but is not limited to, potential customers. When you have several thousand fans going apoplectic on the official forums, begging and pleading to hear something official from Bethsoft, and then Pete gives no explanation (whether "our hands were tied. We couldn't tell until now" or something else) then it seems to me that he is not relating to the public very well at all. His "update" is curiously devoid of even a word of explanation as to the week long silence. And remember, not only did Howard and Hines say nothing to the fans. They said nothing to the media either. Comes across as cocky and aloof, whether that was the intention.

I wouldn't places my hopes on that. Could be, but from a commercial standpoint, January is a BAD month for new releases.

If the reasons are troubles between T2 and Bethsoft, I wouldn't expect an explanation. If they are within Bethesda itself, I would neither.

It wuld be nice to know, but I can live without knowing

Well, gee, I think I can live without knowing, too. My complaint rises from the fact that I am a perfectionist and I just hate seeing someone not doing their job well. But again, a simple statement along the lines of, "Sorry that we left you hanging for several days. It was outside of our control" would have satisifed me and I think most everyone. As I've told Pete himself in emails we exchanged, it's his reputation, not mine.

Information relating to the delay of a product has to be handled first between the Devs and the Pubs. The primary reason for this is that the devs have actual legal contracts with the Pubs and the Pubs have invested real money in the Devs.

Once things are worked out between the Devs and the Pubs next comes the press release to the public... who for the currently being worked on project have invested exactly ZERO dollars/pounds/yen whatever.

I found the forum thread from Pete to be quite timely in that it was only a few days between the 'leak' about the release date and some kind of informal response from Bethesda. Pete is doing his job just fine.

For a 'perfectionist' you don't demonstrate much understanding in the basic relationship between a Dev and Pub.
