You are right about 'awhile' being an adverb. And become, became; it's only my dialect preference (you maybe very well correct). For a while is an object of a preposition usage, or is it awhile describing the verb? My head hurts!

I guess since your doing most of the work, either use is fine with me. I just perfer the a-together-school. Unless anyoner else knows better, go with what pleases you. It is a small matter.

quote:
I've just done a search at my local newspaper with the term "can not". Only two results came up. "cannot" gave me several thousands hits.

I expect that from a newspaper since space is a premium. Cannot is shorter in length than can not. Try an online novel. But I live in the Midwest USA and we do have our own localized dialect. But not as bad as the rest of the country. Many US news anchors are originally from the Midwest due to our mostly neutral accent and slang usage.

Interesting find, nevertheless. I'm surprised they do not go for can't - it is even shorter in letter count length.

0330 here... =/ Monty, Tonak, Telbor, Pardos, and more Patrick next.

YES, more please..more, MORE!

Good God, do you think all these changes will be put into the Mod upgrade? I installed the Modkit, but I have no idea how to change the sentences. I guess Cothyso will have plenty to look over!!

But THEY will be IN for a surprise when Greg returns.

{ I don't know what the word "in" is here for... just to emphasize it. }

@ The phrase " in for a big surprise" = (in trouble) is just an colloquial expression. It's OK as it is originally.

But, put some emotion into the sentence, he's deliberately emphasising this, so it could be like:

#But THEY will be IN for a surprise when Greg returns!

So get a move on or you'll get the trouble of a lifetime.
So move on or you'll get the trouble of a lifetime.

#So get a move on or you'll get the beating of a lifetime.

["So get a move on" is another coll. phrase = so get your butt moving along (down the road)]

Can then be just (also with braggart emotion, that's why the exclamation mark):

#So hit the road, or you'll get the beating of a lifetime!

You SERIOUSLY don't expect the boys to believe YOUR story, just because of some yellowed pieces of paper, do you?

#You SERIOUSLY don't expect the boys to believe YOUR story, just because of some old, yellowed pieces of paper - Now do you?

[added *old* to show what yellowed means. "Now do you?" is another coll. phrase (rhetorical). I would leave it in.]

I don't know, it looks kinda strange with a '-' and upper cap letter, perhaps (and some emotions again ):

# You SERIOUSLY don't expect the boys to believe YOUR story, just because of some old, yellowed pieces of paper, now do you?!

The farmers called the militia, the militia soldiers the Paladins, who came and destroyed the monster.
The farmers called the militia. The soldiers and paladins came and destroyed the monster.

I think that in german, the sentence was more like:

#The farmers called militia, militia called paladins and paladins came and destroyed the monster.

Basically, you can change the sentence to sound more nicer, but in general in german it was something a la one called others, others could also not deal with it and called the third party and the third party came in and blasted it apart, as it was an easy opponent to them. So can build a sentence on this, but in any case, the militia could not handle the stone guardian and had to call paladins in turn to deal with it. and "militia", not "soldiers".

quote:
@"The teleporter stone seems not to function. But yet, I can still feel a vibrational energy emitting from it."

Yeah can be so too. Or maybe remove the 'energy' and leave vibrations, something like:

#The teleporter stone seems not functional. But yet, I can still feel vibrations emitting from it.

Although, I need to see the german text again, because I think that he actually said in german - if translating directly - "Can you hear this?" - which means we'd need to change the "feel" word to "hear" and then use appropriate action word, so to say Humming or vibrations or whatever.

You lads can't lift a finger without grog, eh? Right you are.

I'd just add exclamation mark in the end, as Samual is obviously happy that people like his brews, so:

#You lads won't lift a finger without grog, eh? Right you are!

??The rum may have some fishy taste. We only have old herring barrels here, but rum stays rum. Enjoy

Maybe something like:

#The rum may taste a little fishy, but we only have old herring barrels here. Still, rum is rum! Enjoy!

OK, lunch break is over, back to work I'll read up more later.

EDIT: just a quick add - is it better as 'rum' or 'rom' in english? Somehow I feel it should be 'rom' in english.. Beats me, correct me if I'm wrong. Here locally, in my language, it's called 'rumm'

As for "rum" or "rom"... "rom" means either "read-only memory" or Roman* (e.g. romance, Romanica, Book of Romans).

For the "awhile" case: Check this and this out.

The literal translation seems to be:

"This teleporter stone seems not functional, and yet, one still hears it whirring." ~ cothyso et al., Xerxes712

However, there's no need to stick to the original text. In my opinion, "feel vibrations emitting" makes more sense than "hear vibrations emitting".

Yes, the list is growing, not shrinking. I wonder how cothyso would handle it, as he said he was going to check every single line in the list for its validity.

I'm not sure how to compile the OU.CSL list; however, the GOTHIC.DAT list requires the original script, which is kept only by the team.

As both of you may have known, the TAGMT Wiki Resource Site (Credits to HornOx et al.) has a detailed tutorial on how to change the subtitles in G2.

I can agree with the changes except for this one is important:

@ The phrase " in for a big surprise" = (in trouble) is just an colloquial expression. It's OK as it is originally.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

But, put some emotion into the sentence, he's deliberately emphasising this, so it could be like:

#But THEY will be IN for a surprise when Greg returns!
----------------------------------------------------------
It is important to keep in the English slang 'in for a BIG surprise'. Just keep in the word BIG. That 'IN' is part of the slang phrase, and why it puzzles you.

#But THEY will be in for a BIG surprise when Greg returns!

As for 'rum' I never heard of it spelled any other way.
-------------------------------------------
^The farmers called the militia; the militia called the paladins. Then the paladins came and destroyed the monster.
Whailor ^

That sounds even better to me, I agree.

--------labourer -->laborer [to keep it consistent English]
--------------------------------------------

If they say "Can you hear that?" the question before this sentence, then that phrase can be either ...'hear (feel) vibrations being emitted' may have a problem. Or, go with humming. Since I can not think of any other word that will go with 'hearing'. I do not know.

'The Dead Harpy' in the original German it says 'To the dead Harpy' literally.
Taverne 'Zum toten Harpie'.

Just as you drink 'to the dead harpy' being dead and everyone is glad. But that sounds ackward in English. I would just plainly calll it 'Dead Harpy'. So refer to it, as in : Let's go to the 'Dead Harpy'.

But in the end, it is only a small matter.

[Yes. To re-phrase to clarify the colloquial English: If I was you (in your place), I would saty well away from them. They don't ask questions (Coll. English again = The will kill you without asking you a question why you are there bothering them).]

Confusing, ehh? I cannot keep up! Wait, I never use cannot, but that is just me; the 2 out of two hundred thousand.

That is odd. I was never taught for my whole life that it was OK to use cannot....I learn something new every day. I always believed it was 'can not' for proper English. Go figure.

As for the "To the Dead Harpy" name, does it make sense to put it into a German sentence?
--------------------------------
If you look using an hex editor at the Gothic.dat file, German version. Search for *zum toten Harpie*, or just *Harpie*. You will find it all through the game referred to that, 'To the dead Harpy'.

Er hat seine Hütte zwischen der Taverne 'Zur Toten Harpie' und Onars Hof.

It has its cottage between the Taverne 'to the dead Harpie' and Onars yard.

His house is between the 'To the dead Harpy' tavern and Onar's farm.

But in English we just use the short version (even if the meaning changed some) for speed of speech. 'Dead Harpy'.

@This teleporter stone seems not to function; and yet, one can still hear it whirring.

I'm partial to this version too, but there has been some legitimate concern raised by Whailor; and thus, I was looking to see what others may think. I will go with the popular vote. I am not the whole English speaking world. I thought we may come to a consensus with enough input.

Would it be fine if one writes "His house is between the tavern 'To the Dead Harpy' and Onar's farm."?

Would the reader still understand it?

The farmers called the militia, the militia soldiers the Paladins, who came and destroyed the monster.

?The farmers called on the militia, but it took the full force of the Paladin soldiers to come and destroy the monster.

I need to see the original German, ackward structure.

---------------
That sentence is actually: He has his hut between the tavern 'To the dead Harpy' and Onar's farm.

I would just use the simpler 'Dead Harpy' name, in place of 'To the Dead Harpy'.

I see the correction to my punctuation. That is OK. I guess go ahead and use it, since it is the closest to the original German text.

Just keep in mind that English is not an exact language. The first line has the word "hear" doesn't mean the second line needs to have it as well.

Nor do we need literal translation. e.g. Here are some idioms, translated literally from my language: "Uncle Yip likes dragons", "to play piano in front of cows", "one meal leads to thousands of gold" ... Sounds ridiculous, eh?

Wow! I'm away for a just a few days and come back to see you guys have managed to fill nearly five more pages of corrections. It seems I missed a lot, and am reading up on it all right now.

Are the individual character dialogue texts listed on the first post up to date? I went through them and added a couple corrections, but if you've already gone through them I won't bother posting them.

I need to see the original German, ackward structure.

...

The farmers called the militia, the militia soldiers the Paladins, who came and destroyed the monster.
Kiwi: The farmers called the militia. The soldiers and paladins came and destroyed the monster.
Whailor: The farmers called the militia; the militia called the paladins. Then paladins came and destroyed the monster.

"The farmers called the militia; the militiamen called the paladins, who also came and destroyed the monster."

{ I don't find it awkward. Maybe a little run-on, but I tried to "compensate" it by replacing the first comma with a semicolon. }
I honestly prefer Whailors/Kiwi Boy's suggestions the most. The repetition in the first part of the sentence is kind of poking fun at how useless the militia is (in the speakers eyes).

Just keep in mind that English is not an exact language. The first line has the word "hear" doesn't mean the second line needs to have it as well.
If the main concern is humming vs. whirring, we could just compromise and eliminate it altogether by saying something like: "The teleporter stones appear dysfunctional, but you can still hear strange noises emanating from them."

Additionally, "crawler" should be pluralized. The player has to kill them all before Bloodwyn shows up.

Welcome back, Decline! Again, thank you for your support.

Regarding to the individual dialogues, it's not entirely up-to-date. I am going to update it immediately.

However, please, post your suggestions, even if it is looked over already. Many of the lines are overlooked and there is a few lines I don't understand and I marked them with '???'.

I entered the original German line in a machine translator and the result, adjusted to proper English, was written in quotes.

Even though the meaning was changed somehow, the pun behind the repetition is certainly quite brilliant.

As for the teleporter stone line, this is what I left in the file:

quote:
DIA_Addon_Merdarion_ADWHello_06_03
%These teleporter stones don't seem to work, but one can still hear them whirring.
Xerxes712: #This teleporter stone seems dysfunctional; yet, one can still hear it whirring.
Whailor: #whirring => humming
Xerxes712/Whailor: @The teleporter stone seems not to function. But yet, I can still feel a vibrational energy emitting from it
DECLINE: #The teleporter stones appear dysfunctional, but you can still hear strange noises emanating from them.

{ I didn't put the %#@ notation in the file. }

Since we almost finish the dialogues, I am trying to update the individual dialogues now. It will be up as soon as possible.

But, GOTHIC.DAT may take longer. To be honest, the translation there is simply ... atrocious.

@Edith says the update is now completed.

Hello everyone. Welcome back to our little corner of the universe.

I read over your corrections and suggestions. They look good enough for me.

Between four people, it does help with decisions on what makes for the best sentences to cover the most English speaking people possible.

#Martin will be happy if I tell him, who has been rummaging through his stuff while he was gone.
Martin will be happy if I tell him about the person who has been rummaging through his stuff while he was gone.
[you could say that but the comma makes it silently understood, not so long and wordy] [, = about the person] redundent. The Hero is talking directly to the thief. it is understood in the dialog he means him.

You're saying, the goblins are having it? [No, sorry, the original is correct ]

If the sentence can still convey its meaning, we can consider it as a minor joke.

All the ones who are still alive ...
[both are correct, it is just style. He want to emphazise 'Everyone', I like the first..but you know...that is just me. ]

"Everyone" is singular", and that's why I avoid "everyone are" as much as possible.
