I am sooo jeleous. I went to go find Darklands last night, and could not find it. I moved about 18 months ago, and really hope it made the move with me. Even if I do find it, it will have to be in the garage (we use it for storage) and the disks will most likely be ruined 
I will continue the hunt over the weekend. |

I am astonished to see mention of what I consider to be the unknown hero of RPGs. The atmosphere of this game, the fetid and foreboding early European cities - reeking of dangerous adventure!
The scoring system was that of fame - how long you'd be remembered, how wonderful! Meeting up with the characters in the early stages of the game in the side street drinking wells nearly brings a tear to my eye with the fondest of memories.
The setting was superb, the religous and superstitious overtones, the extremities of wealth and poverty and numerous other background details which were brought to life in pictorial fashion and then played out in typical isometric RPG fashion - all hitherto unknown to the age of 'crude' processors at the time. But oh - the atmosphere. If I recall correctly, they studied about 80 reference books to establish a highly plausible scenario, so far from our typical RPG world of trend-set creatures.
The wonders of exploration through the simple lands made real to a level unknown since 'Elite' made this an experience almost too beautiful to behold on the humble 286. My quest is to rediscover that path of glory that was shown to me by Microprose's Darklands. |

Darklands... a lot of nice memories brough me to think that at that time i wasn't able to even think what i was doing... i played DL every day after school for month and month... astonish by the graphics and the game-play, but i never though that that game will be history! I never though that after 10 years i will still be able to talk about it and feel really good!!

I remember Darklands. It was one of my favourite games. It was slightly buggy, though, and I didn't have the means to get a patched version (what with living in summat of a third world country). I sort of never finished the main quest, mostly for the same reasons as Lintra, couldn't be bothered to hang around for the twice-a-year pagan ritual. I have it somewhere on my hard drive, and have no time to play it

Here, you can order the Ultimate Darklands (or as I called it, Darklands Gold) CD rom. They have tech support faq which states it works on Windows 95-XP (although you may have to get VDMS).

As I understand it (because I used to own a copy of this that Microprose published) it contains all the patches and the game editor/cheat file (where you could make a party of geriatrics to build up their skills, and then edit the save game to make them young again- 25 year old archbishops rock!).
Hint book is extra. And necessary, IMHO. I'm getting my mom to send my copy to me.

I hate you 
Just this last week end I open the last possible boxes Darklands could be hiding in ... and it wasn't there. I spent most of Sunday resigning myself to the fact I would never play Darklands or Daggerfall again ... then you post this!
Should I ignore this new info and continue my life w/ out Darklands ... or get my wife really ticked off at me 'cuz I will dissappear for so long ... what if it's not as good as I remember? What if Win98 has problems with it? Oh my! 
Maybe I should just dig up Worlds of Xeen and play that instead ... Assuming I can find it

@Lintra: you can easily run Darklands in Windows (i succeeded in running it under Win98 and WinME) and without doing nothing!!
No boot disk required... just run and play!
... so this is not a problem! ...
... maybe your wife is a harder one ...

This game is why I love Windows XP. All I had to do was download VDMS sound emulation (2.04 just came out this weekend) and run the exe with vdms. I played it all lunch hour.
One problem- I think I took the best path for everyone but my Alchemist, as my leader had 50 speak common, my bruiser had 30 + in Ride and Woodwise and Stealth, and my priest had 55+ in religion and Virtue, but my Alchemist had only 30 + in Alchemy (55 in artifacts, tho). Sigh. I wish I could remember where I put the game at home, so I could have my mom send me the clue book....
Still, a pretty kick-butt party, all in all...
