There is a 4th level druid/cleric spell called Chaotic Commands that will protect a single character from ANY mental spell effect, fear, confusion, charm, etc. Very useful, and it lasts a long time as well. If the circles under your characters change from red to yellow, it means that they're afraid. Resist fear will take care of that. I can't remember exactly what one it is, but I think the Paladin class (or one of the kits) gets Resist Fear spells as a class power.

Also, keep in mind that any spell that increases saving throws helps your party to resist spells, so if you skim the manual and find something that gives a +something bonus to all saving throws, then that will help. I think the Cleric Bless spell gives a bonus against fear effects, and Chant gives saving throw bonuses to everything, so use them too.

My first party at the end:

Me (Inquisitor, great paladin kit)
Imoen (I went to fetch her about when I was level 10, so she wasn't behind)
Minsc (My front man)
Jan (Backup mage and decent thief)
Jaheira (She can summon fire elementals. woot)
Anomen (He's annoying, but I needed someone as a primary healer)

If I didn't mind having evil characters in my party - they get ticked off if your reputation gets too high, and might even leave - I might have replaced Anomen with Viconia and Imoen with Edwin, and maybe Minsc with Korgan.

Those changes are based upon stats alone. I like to keep characters that make me laugh around regardless of how good they are; it adds to my experience. Edwin has one of the FUNNIEST subplots I've ever seen in an RPG; I'd keep him around just for that.

If I remember correctly, Chaotic commands was a life saver when I was trying to get the Hammer of Thunderbolts and later when I was er... underground (sorry trying not to include spoilers.)

Just one point about "evil" characters - remember that your actions can influence how your party develops (there are at least 3 cases where you can eventually change a person's alignment based on conversation you have with them). I'm not gonna tell you who but it was this level of detail and interaction that makes BG2 one of the greatest game I have ever played. Although having played 3rd Edition D&D for some time now it seems strange goning back to THAC0's and negative AC. (Takes me back to my school days )

This confused me because the only RPGs I played before were NWN and Morrowind, an din them the AC (or in NWN) is better when its HIGHER.

For the early part of the game I threw away some banded mail or things because its AC was lower than my stuff I was wearing...until eventually I figured it out when I got a plate mail with AC 2 and knew it was the better armour than chain mail )

Ohhh and what IS a THACO?????

I have no idea at all, although its probably somewhere in the second manual, but I can dig in to find it

Baldurs Gate II is awesome though I agree, really polished and well made game designed for maximum enjoyment. I have been trying to stop Jahira and Aerie having catfights over me, the women in this game are very difficult to please!!! And that whcko Minsc just cracks me up talking about his hamster

I am wondering about going to rescue Imoen. Its been suggested I go get hear about LvL 10 so she can level up properly as I go on.

If I do go and get her now, will I lose the chance to complete all the Chapter 2 quests I still havent done? I am level 10 now, so I thought maybe I should go get Imoen, I have the money, but theres still a LOT of things to do in Chapter 2 , I havent even completed half of the tasks there yet.

Will I be able to come back to them after I get her?

THACO = To Hit Armor Class of 0.
If the thing you are attacking has an armor class of 0 then you need to roll that or higher to hit them.

You should try having Jahera, Aerie, and Vicona.
I forget if you can still do them when you come back, but when you finally get back you will be so high level as to make doing them almost meaningless. You will come back but it will be a long time.
If you to do most everything in the game you will probably hit the experience cap, so I’d do everything in Chapter 2 and just let Imoen catch up later.

OK so I guess as soon as I go to the Shadow thief person, and pay the money to find where the Cowled Wizards are thats end of Chapter 2 right?

I just want to know what point exactly is the leave chapter 2 point so I can avoid it until I am done.

Mind you being at the level cap might be a bonus for beating that god awful big badass dragon... I am REALLY glad he gave me the choice to walk away, because he wasted my whole party wiht a single breath!!!

I guess I am not supposed to try him until I have some serious high leveled ass kickers to fight with?

One thing I would like in BG II is some kind of library so I can study the creeatures and know what they are immune to and what kind of attacks they have

It doesn't have that stuff in my manual, and it would be VERY usefull. I suppose hard core DnD peopl;e know most of that stuff already though, but its hard for us novices

Ok I am off to try figure out how to get Enchanted Weapons made, I think it about time I got some custom goodies for my crew.

Ohh and wher the heck do i find a Magic Bag?? My inventory space is crippling me

For some info on monsters try looking here
http://mysticsyn.tripod.com/Monsters.htm

and here
http://www.mikesrpgcenter.com/bgate2/index.html

For more info (certainly there's more on BGII monsters), see
http://www.sorcerers.net/Games/BG2/index.htm
- tons of info here. Great site! Including FAQ for beginners on D&D rule (your THAC0 question). In fact internet is full of info on BGII, you just have to search a little.

Hope those links help

Great links thanks

But I have run into some serious poop that I cant get past

I went into the sewers to do the Temple of Helm Quest, and I am getting murdered by those damn Mind slayers!!!

How the hell do I beat them?

I have cast every single protection I have on my characters, I even tried gearing my own guy the main fighter up with every protection, chaotic commands, bless, defensive harmony, protection from evil, stoneskin, barksin, haste , oil of speed, regeneration, death ward, resist charm- hold- fear , I gave him a full plate +1 a dragon sheild, that Uber Katana from the Temple district, and sent him in to the doorway to take them one at a time while my mages/clerics launched spells galore, including two fireballs and two dooms, and I STILL get absoluttely MAULED by them

How the hell am I supposed to beat them??

I have nothing left in my arsenal, I tried EVERYTHING possible at once boosted them to the maximum with potions and pells, and the damn things just tear me to shreds in seconds ;(

Theres NO WAY thats possible. I mean WTF?? My mans a lvl 11 fighter geared up to the maximum, with so many protections and boosters they dont fit on his picture!!

How can they still rip me a new one like that and be possible to beat??

HELPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppp , p[lease someone spare my sanity, I have tried about 50 times now and have not even been close, the most I can kill is maybe two of them or three, which still leaves about 5 more and an umber hulk

This, for me, was the second toughest battle in the whole game (including the expansion!) (the first being with a strange inhabitant of the docks - I think we all know who I mean - and if you don't I'm not spoiling it for you ). You will come back to the city later on and I suspect that is when you are meant to do this quest. Chaotic commands does help but what you really need is an item called a Greenstone Amulet this gives total protection verses mind affecting attacks - however you also need a good AC (so a very low one ) as Mind Flayers can also drain stats (intellegence I think). Leave this battle until later (and even then use summoned monsters to help out).

There are a few really tough battles in the game - you have found 2 of them so far - the Red Dragon and the Mind Flayers. There are at least another 2 I can think of (3 if you include the expansion pack.)

As for defeating the dragon I find that buffing one or two chars with max fire protection spells and giving them weapons with big +'s v's dragons really helps. There should be at least one halbard that you have come across by now which is good against Dragons. Spells aren't much cop at your level v's dragons due to there high magic resistance. If you intend to do some casting start with a couple of lower resistance spells then a couple of protection removal spells such as breach, remove magic etc.

Good Luck

Yeah I think "run away like a scared girl" is the solution for me just now, these things are way out of my league..........

I was going strong for a while, finally my party management was getting pretty good at ass kicking without load/save tactics.

I have been using Yoshi as my lead scout all decked up in shadow armour , sewer clock, and shadow boots, so he can move like the wind I scouted them, planned my attack with guil.

Sent some cobwebs in to hold them, launched two fireballs in and a doom, then moved my boosted fighters me and Minsc in for the kill...........................................................except the only thing getting killed was me and my whole party by an unstopable horde of mindslayers

I tried several variations, but its not like I even feel like I am close to it, they are killing me by a mile so I guess retreat is my only option and come back a few levels advanced. SOme good kit that stops their effects would help too

Ohh well I have plenty else to do though

Mind Flayers have always been a bugbear for me (As oppose to actual bugbears which tend to be more like souped up goblins ). I remember my first encounter with them in SSI's classic Eye of the Beholder - sweet mother of, they were tough - that mind blast paralysed half my party. Of course I started using then straight away in my pen n'paper games

It's good to know that they are still causing problems even know all these years later. My two other favourite enemies are Drow and Vampires but I've yet to see a really good computer controlled Drow or Vampire enemy - in PnP both these creatures are leathal if played well (Not like an old DM of mine who had our party discover a group of drow sitting unprepared around a campfire and he gave us surprise (this man just couldn't think like a drow ))

Wait a sec... you said you were doing the Temple of Helm quest?

If I remember correctly, killing Mind Flayers has nothing to do with that quest. It involves killing Beholders, which are a lot more annoying, IMHO. Good luck.

My first suggestion would be to go get Imoen, if you want her, that is. All of your party members get experience points distributed equally, so she wont be "catching up" for some time. ALL of the quests that are doable in Chapter 2 are doable in Chapter 6, after you get back, even the ones that you were in the middle of in Chapter 2. Very few quests in BG2 have a time limit. By the time you get back, Mind Flayers will be no problem.

If you want to be stubborn about it, though...
Chaotic Commands will protect your guys against the various long range Domination/Psionic Blast attacks that Mind Flayers love to chuck around. BUT, it wont do jack against the deadly close range attacks. It's much more beneficial for you if you can lead the Flayers into a small corridor, so you're only fighting one or two at once. If one of your fighters gets hit, and a little red arrow appears as a status icon on their portrait, it means that their intelligence is drained and another hit will kill them instantly. So, GET THEM OUT OF REACH. Use a Haste spell to help them retreat faster, and put someone else in the front line. Once the drain wears off, they'll be ready to fight again.

My advice would be to wait. As I recall, you don't get anything that's immediately useful from the Mind Flayer lair in the sewers.

True - the only useful item you get needs to be combined with another item from the red dragon and yet another from somewhere else. There are some very tough battles in the city which I think are meant to be left until chapter 6 - rest assured you will get a chance to do them.

Yeah I am going to leave that and go and polish off the Umar Witch Project (Damn I love the humour in this game).

Does anyone know where I can find the second piece of a Bow that I found under the Tanners shop in the Bridge region? I have the shaft of the Bow, but I have no bow string for it.

It looks a cool bow and I would very much like to give it to Yoshi for Xmas, but I need to get the thing strung

Any ideas? I thought it would be somewhere nearby, but as yet I haven't found it.

I think that I can remember where the other half is, but I'm not going to tell you.

I will tell you this: many of the required components for the powerful weapons can only be found in the story-related areas that you get access to when you decide to go after Irenicus.

So I'd do that.

The string is easy to miss. Be thorough when the time comes (it's not anywhere in chapter 2).

There are only two quests you can't do in chapter 6 that I can recall... Mae'var's quest and finding Viconia.

And it's always worthwhile doing the quests. Leveling up is fun!

As for killing mind flayers... well... it's cheap but it works (they're not fun. They're anti-fun, just like beholders so I have no qualms about cheezing either of their asses).

Take a Wand of Cloudkill (you've probably found at least one). Run on up to a door. Pause game. Open door. Target center of the room. Unpause. Repause the instant it fires. Close door. Unpause (and probably g et the hell stunned out of you).

Mind flayers can't open doors (no monsters can). They stand there and get gassed. Repeat two or three times and they're dead.

WHen the wand gets down to low charges ... sell it... and then buy it back. It will be recharged to 50 (more than enough). A great purchase (or a steal ).

I hate beholders. Shield of Balduran. All the way. I hate them I hate them I hate them.
