When to join a guild (Mage)

Last time I was playing mercenary and was able to terrorize all enemies by way of force before I actually joined the guild. But this time I want to play a mage and at level 11 am not sure when I should do this.

My character can just barely kill snappers one at a time and hasn't got a chance against an Orc or a skeleton yet. Because I have not joined the guild yet, I have no runes, so my mage abilities are still limited to fairly low level spell scrolls and so this character is pretty useless (killed the black troll though, but only by the hide-behind-the-rock cheese technique). So most of the pre-guild quests for the mercenaries are out, because they involve fighting. And I am stumped by the thieves guild at the moment - can't get past the delivery of the parcel to the thief in the bar.

As for joining the guard, the only thing they gave me to do was hunt down the thieves so that's out until I progress in the thieves guild.

So should I join the guild now? Will that stop me from doing the other pre-guild quests for the other guilds? I am about to invest four levels of experience in magic but this is pretty much the deciding point for me in this game, so I should know whether I am cutting myself off potential experience points by joining now.

Hello Hagatha,

If I were you I would make all the possible quests but I would be careful that I won't join any other Guild or Community like Mercenaries...

Anyway, I always make all the quests that I can make when I'm a Citizen and Then go and Join any Faction but with A Pretty good level so I don't have any problem fighting for quests Inside the Community...

Good Luck!

Yes, that's what I thought, too. Thanks. Guess I'll just stumble along, then. Actually for a wimp rookie one-handed sword fighter/archer, my guy does ok. He stands on a lot of high places while fighting, though. But at least my Black Troll technique held out so I have access to lots of potion recipes.

The quests to join the mercs arent all that hard, im sure you can do them all, (except messing with bullco ) They give quite some xp and are fun to do
good luck, tolgerias

Go to Onar's Farm and knock down all the mercenaries you can for xp.
Try exploring all the world until you get to places with unbeatable monsters or people.
