First off, I would like to say that the people at xicat have been most
uncooperative. I have been trying to get this game to work for the last few
days. I have emailed them and called their office and left a message. The
first email reply I received said to update my graphics and sound cards,
which I did. The game still won't work. The second email I received said to
install the patch even though I don't have a Radeon graphics card.

OK, here's my problem. The game installed ok, but when my character walks
around, the game becomes very choppy and jerky. He stops running or walking
while the computer is loading somethng and I have to wait until that
finishes. There is no way I can play the game with this situation happening.

I have a Compaq 7AP195, 1GHz AMD Athlon, 128MB memory, 60.0GB hard drive,
16MB NVIDIA TNT2 graphics card and sound blaster audio. I am running Windows
ME.

Is there anyone out there who can help me get this game running so it is
playable. I am extremely frustrated.

I have tried uninstalling and re-installing the game, but no changes in game play.

For some odd reason, it seems to work better (still some hesitation but not too bad) at the very beginning of the game, but once I enter the old camp, I can't move around.

Thank you.

As far as I understand you, Gothic runs stable but very choppy. Itīs so slow that itīs virtually unplayable.
Is this correct? Did you have crashes or only massive swapping?

Try the following:
1.open the console: (a) open the status screen (b) type marvin (c)press Esc (d)if you did it right you can read "Marvin mode" on screen.
2.press F2 to open the console
3.type: toggle frame
4.F2

Now watch the frame rate. 20fps is perfect, but I guess you donīt even get 10fps, which is of course unplayable.

Turn down all graphics options and see if the frame rate increases. If so you simply have performance problems.

Thanks Gorath for your very prompt reply. I am not sure I know what you mean by opening the console. Could you be a little more specific? Do I start the game to open the console?

Yes. Most games have a console to manipulate in-game features while you are playing, like activate godmode, spawn monsters and items, etc. . Gothic has thousands of cheats.

Start the game and do exactly what I wrote. A bit more precise:
step (a) AND (c): press b or s to open/close the status screen.
(b)type the word MARVIN and donīt press return.

You forgot to answer my questions from the first post.

Gorath, I will give it a try.

As for your other questions. Not experiencing crashes. Sometimes when I start the game, it freezes and I have to reboot, but most times, I am able to get in the game and it does not crash. However, yes, it is unplayable.

This is good. Some people with Soundblaster cards on AMD systems have crashes.
My guess is that your system is simply too slow. Remember that a PC is as fast as its slowest vital part.

What version do you have? There is a patch for people crashing. It's 1.08k

Just wanted everyone to know that I added 256MB to my already 128MB today and wow, what a difference. The game is no longer choppy or jerky. It plays so much better. Can't wait to get into the game and play it the way it was meant to be played.

So, if anyone out there only has 128MB, you might want to think about adding some memory.

I don't know if I'm having the same problem this fella is having, but I keep locking up "randomly" in various parts of the game world. The game will "stutter" and then come to a screeching halt - the only thing left to do is to reboot. Speed isn't a factor as I have a P4 1.7 - I also run a Voodoo 4 and a Soundblaster Live! card. I really like the game but I simply can't play it as unstable as it is. I can play for 20 mins or maybe 5 before it locks up (and it WILL lock up eventually) - but I never know when it's coming. Seems graphics related but I dunno. Yes, I've updated all the drivers - including downloading the updated drivers to make my Voodoo DirectX 8 compliant. Thanks for you responses!

Hard to give you any suggestion. I doubt itīs the Voodoo4. Itīs probably too slow but it should be compatible. Iīm playing on Win98 with a Voodoo5. Negligible visual problems but rock stable.

Try all the stuff mentioned in the 'mss32' threads. Change the sound provider and restart the game, disable reverb and surround, install in default directory.
