Strict rules do not induce obedience, but instead they insure rebellion. English is a mix-match language with thousands of regional usages and dialects and conventions. Formally, there are many competing standards for what is correct usage, and even standards such as those by the Modern Language Assoc. (MLA) is starting to fall out of favor by some professors. Even dictionaries have variations in spellings and meanings. There is no overall standard for English because people everywhere think and talk differently; no standard can please everyone’s commutation needs. English works because humans have the ability to understand language without strict standards, not because of strict standards. I agree that standards must be created, standards are in flux constantly, and strict standards can never take hold in such a choatic enviroment. Strict standards would therefore hinder more people who don’t fully understand the standards than help clear-up bad grammer. People have the need to commutate, and they would disregard strict standards and move to informal areas to commutate instead of learning the standards. This ensures that the standards would be short lived: so far this has proved true with all strict standards of English I can think of.

I meant rules in general, not the rules of the language.

Late to the scene and unwilling to read through the poor quality writings of hoi polloi, I submit my opinion in an underhanded fashion.

As cfmdobbie points out, your post DID contain a minimum of one error. You have a singular verb with a plural noun. So, even allowing the poor word choice, you still have an error. Undeniable fact...

All things considered, this whole thread is a waste of bandwidth. The only redeeming features were Lintra's and Kayla's posts, which made me smile. If it weren't for the fact that you did exactly what you were ranting about, this thread would have died the quick death it deserved.

I shall now return to my corner and play well with others.

Edit- On review, there were a couple other enjoyable posts tucked in there.

Any community of people can't survive without rules. D&D wouldn't be the same without the rules. How much fun would a cardgame be without any rules? Wouldn't it be extremely dangerous to ride a car if there weren't any rules? Wouldn't any language become unreadable when nobody would adhere to the rules?
We can't survive without rules. Rules are an essential part of our life. Without rules there would be anarchy.

That said, at times we could do with less rules to make us all happy. I just added a new one today.

I try to be as grammatically correct aas I ever can be, but I find the english language and its grammar to be confusing at best, so usually I just type what my gut-feeling tells me is the correct form. About spelling though, I always try to spell wright right when I write.

@Lintra, you called for me on page two?

Just to be picky with Myrthos, It should be FEWER rules, not LESS!! Pinnen I sympathise; I studied several foreign languages and could never keep the rules straight either.

I wasn't Pinnen last time I checked, but what the heck! You sound so desperate trying to sell those things... I'll take a spelling wand with minimum of 10,000 charges and this dust of yours, but only if it was approved by Bermudas Medical Service Do you have all the papers? If so, send your goods to me ASAP. I'm going to write another paper for my Law and Cyberenivornment class... I'll need these tools for my 15 pages of something

I was Pinnen last time I checked, but who knows today? I sure wasn't bad guy last time though, but as I said; who knows today?

I think I'll just go with a spell today, Lintra. Do they come in pairs or dozens?
